Credit Card Hacked!

Recommended Posts

I'm sure they're a few out here that have had the unfortunate luck to have someone access there credit card and make unauthorized charges against it. I had that luck today. When I had gotten home from work, there was a message on my answering machine from my credit card company requesting me to call them for a security check. As it turned out someone in the past few days had gained access to my account and made a number of charges. One was for over $300 along with a few other smaller charges. The one real interesting thing was that there was a charge on 2/25 for an order from Concord Music Group for nearly $100. I explained to the operator at the card company that while I've dealt with Concord prior, it must have been a few months since I last made a purchase. I was told to call Concord to verify the order and as it turns out, no order was ever placed on the 25'th. In fact Concord confirmed what I told the credit card operator that my last purchase was back in December. Really weird stuff. I called the credit card company back and again she confirmed the purchase for me. As for now, no action is required on my part. Needlees to say, everything is now frozen and I'm waiting for a new card. I did thank her though for picking up on this. Anyone else here willing to share similiar stories?

Several years ago I ordered a classical CD from a reputable British-based site -- don't recall the name now -- and two weird charges for several hundred dollars each popped up on my credit card statement. They were made from Eastern Europe and were used to open up websites, porn operations perhaps. Charges were cancelled, and a new card seemed to fix things. I also opted to add a regular watchdog service through my credit card outfit for a fee. Unnecessary perhaps, but I sleep a little better.

Someone debited my credit card with 15 x € 15 or something like that two or three years ago - it was obvious it was a hoax. Whoever did it had no benefit as it was credited to two companies, who willingly admitted they hadn't had any business with me. I was refunded the next month. But my wife almost went nuts over the incident. I got a new card and nothing similar has happened ever since.

It happened to me 25 years ago, in the early days of home banking. A+, and Apple-dedicated computer magazine, assigned me to write an article on this new thing. When they got the piece, the editor asked me for suggestions as to an illustration. I told her that the monthly statements were quite different from what we were used to, so she asked me to send one.

It never occurred to me that the art department would go beyond using my statement as a model. Well, the fools actually reproduced the statement, complete with my account number, etc.

I did not know about it until a friend called me from Philadelphia and wondered why my electric bill was so high, "but, of course, your rent is reasonable," he added. As soon as I realized what had happened, I called Chase and Citibank, but charges had already been made, including some $500 piece of computer equipment, dinner and membership at a California Bally club, etc.

Fortunately, the banks absorbed the loss, but it was still a scary, avoidable experience. The editor's reaction? "Oh, did we do that?"

I never suffered such a fate but got concerned once when .50 international service fees showed up. I was afraid it was someone checking to see if it was a valid charge and then have big bucks start showing up but it turned out it was a Skype charge in addition to the $2.95 I had authorized.

Closest thing to this happening to me was probably 10+ years ago at an optician. 2 identical charges the same day showed up on my statement. But, I noticed it, no one else.

I also got a prescription with 2 left lenses.(I also figured that out-they were just saying I wasn't used to the adjustments yet)

For some reason, I didn't stay with that outfit....

happened to me 3 times, the last two within 10 days of each other and on different cards. i never could figure out how they got these card numbers since I barely used one and the other i used on reputable web sites. the rep at the card company said maybe when i handed it over for a bill at a restaurant, perhaps, but it was never out of my sight.

Two left lenses—you, of all people! How awful that experience must have been!

So, do you now see better with two right lenses? :)

One of our credit card numbers was hacked by someone in South Amercia and we started getting absurd purchases on our card for $1000's of dollars there. We were able to reslove the problem quickly since we've never been there nor bought things there, but it certainly scared us into being more aware of what and where we buy things.

Probably 10+ years ago I had a friend who took a longish vacation to Hong Kong, and spent over $3,000 (legit purchases she really made, I think including her airfare) on one of her credit cards.

A short while later a bunch of OTHER charges started appearing -- in total over $2,000 above what she had actually paid for.

The bank ended up canceling the card, and despite some effort on her part (how much, though, I really don't know), the bank ended up eating the ENTIRE balance -- INCLUDING the $3,000 she had actually spent.

Free trip to China, and loads of souvenirs (expensive stuff too, rugs and pottery and such).

You know, I had a feeling someone was going to say something about 2 left lenses, thanks for not disappointing me! :P

Having 2 lenses that are right, did help! :)

Last month someone used our credit card to purchase a laptop computer. Oddly, they had the laptop sent to our house, with our name listed as the party ordering it. We did not order it. The credit card company cancelled our card immediately and gave us a different card. We mailed the laptop back to the company that sold it.
