Idea for a new Mosaic

Recommended Posts

The story goes that, unfortunately, in the prime of his career in the late 60s and early 70s, Warne Marsh was able to make few recordings to document the state of his art at the time. There is only Ne Plus Ultra from 1969. Right?

Well, according to the Warne Marsh discography, Revelation continued to record Marsh very extensively between 1969-1971, but released virtually none of it. Will we ever be able to hear this, what would probably be the only comprehensive documentation of the art of Warne Marsh at this time?????

Yea, I am talking about a potentially spectacular contribution for Mosaic records.

Well just in case they notice the thread, add another who's interested. And having recently picked up the Pacific Jazz Piano Trio Select the inclusion of Clare Fischer on some of the sessions adds even more interest.

Be warned there are some legal issues here. Might be difficult to untangle.

Such as?

I imagine that the two main issues would be

1) Who now owns the copyright?

2) How much money would they demand for it?

There could also be other issues, for example if Warne Marsh himself was against releasing this material for one reason or another.

Nice idea!

Gary Foster is definitely an artist deserving wider recognition IMO.

+1

Bassist David Parlato should also be more widely available on record. I had the pleasure of playing and recording with him over several years here in NM. He recently retired from playing (he's taken up painting as his creative outlet) but is still doing some teaching.

Great idea for a set, legal wrangling aside!

As can be seen fro the discography, there were plans to release some of this material after Marsh's death under the title "A Giant Passes." I hope that the reason why this didn't materialize was not due to serious legal problems of the sort that Chuck is worried about.

Another problem is that Mosaic might feel sceptical about their ability to sell obscure Warne Marsh recordings. But there is certainly a solid hard core of fans who would buy a set like that without any questions asked.

I wouldn't want to equate Marsh with Gerry Mulligan, but ...

I read somewhere (here? BNBB? certainly a BB) that Michael Cuscuna was surprised that the Mulligan Concert Band set was the quickest selling of any Mosaic.

I'm not saying this Marsh set would sell as quick!

But there's at least anecdotal evidence that Mosaic gives some weight to the passions of its customers and that those responsible for deciding what sets get the green light are unlikely to think they have undebatable wisdom on the matter.

The current financial climate doesn't help, though.
