Chas
Since no one's mentioned them yet, Dead Kennedys. Even better, is the band name they inspired : The Dead Kenny G's Some of the guys from that group are also a part of the cleverly-named , Garage-A-Trois. BeBop
Was reading a copy of Jazz Magazine from 1976 this morning. At the Davenport, Iowa Jazz Festival, there was a group, "The Sons of Bixes".

Jim R
So, I see this thread, and I think to myself... "OH, I remember this classic. I posted in this thread." Then, I open it, and see that it's been upped just about EVERY year since 2003, and... I didn't post in it, which probably means I never saw it before. Does this ever happen to anybody else out there? Anyway, here's what I would have posted: Wombat Suicide (I only remember the name, not the band, which was "after my time") Yogi Phlegm (the original name of The Sons Of Champlin)... (and I KNOW I've posted that information somewhere around here before). Btw, I always thought of the bear, not the spiritual leader or the yoga practitioner, but I don't actually know which one they had in mind. BillF
My favorite is Half Man Half Biscuit. (There's also a Gil Evans number, "Half Man Half Cookie". Don't know which came first.)
Christiern
It isn't bizarre, it does not make juvenile use of four-letter words, but I have always rather liked The Louisiana Toe Ticklers (and wondered if they ever had plain old, down-to-eart Toe jams). Some might find their music a bit corny.
Swinging Swede
Well, there is always Johnny Hates Jazz. And while not a group, there was a guy who took the artist name Various Artists. That may have seemed like a cool idea, but he cannot be easy to find in searches...
Tony Pusey
SF in the 60s had some great names. How about Black Shit Puppy farm? or, the Only Alternative and his Other Possibilities? or, Dancing Food and Entertainment?( ok so thats not so weird, but a bloody good name for a band!) RDK
I like the fake band name my buddy came up with over lunch last week: Rape Whistle.
miles65
How about Ella Fitz & The Geralds? This was a band in Holland 30 years ago.

Sundog
Watches & Detectives, a local basement band from my youth. Apparently the name was hit upon when the over-served lead singer forgot the words to "Watching The Detectives" The rest-- as they say is history. Brilliant! danasgoodstuff
As I'm sure I've mentioned before, it has been on occassion my very great pleasure to play with the long-running Portland 'noise band' Smegma.
