I agree with you, but you really should have the complete Plugged Nickel set.

I couldn't agree more. This set is a revelation. It's tricky to find these days at a reasonable price, but sets do pop up (Academy Records (the CD store) in NYC is a good place to find these sets).

It's bizarre that Columbia's not offering the box set as a download.

Just wading into the box, having collected it today. I must admit that the quality is better than expected visually, no complaints here for just over £2 per CD - and the booklet at least has a precis of each of the albums (it's a small hard-bound book, in both French and English). No sign of any glue issues so far - touch wood. Maybe that was a problem with the Amazon batch? Just listening to 'Dark Magus' (aka No. 43 :D ) - sounds to my ears to be a definite improvement on the US issue (never heard the Japanese CD issue). Better top end and more presence.

I always like it when CBS France put out these 'Miles specials'. Brings back fond memories of the 1973 3LP + 45 rpm single set 'The Essential Miles Davis', put out by Henri Renaud. The one with the velveteen box cover.

PS - there's also a flyer in the box mentioning a 'limited edition trumpet case' offering in 2010 with details at www.geniusofmilesdavis.com. Is that the one that will be populated with metallic spine sets?

Looks like I've got some glue residue on some of the disks - nothing serious, should be easy to sort out. All disks also seem to be 'present and correct'.

The original vinyl sleeve notes on the 'Directions' and 'Circle In The Round' also seem to be quite readable, which I find amazing considering the size of the case.

I don't think I've ever seen what exactly will be in that box. I've seen lots of speculation. According to Columbia/Sony it's the "ultimate" collector's set for Miles, whatever that means.

I'm think it's going to be very expensive.

Says 'Made In The EU' on the bottom of mine - and obviously a Sony France project.

I have to say that the sound on some of these CDs is making me re-appraise some of the 80s Miles material. Case in point - 'The Man With The Horn'. The original LP (which I have) has a disappointing sound, very veiled and compromised top end. On this CD, the top end in particular comes through with much more clarity and Al Foster's sound can be heard to great advantage. More like the sound on the original LPs of 'We Want Miles'.

Wouldn't be caught dead with those <img src="http://www.organissimo.org/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="crazy.gif" />

Looks more like a scuba demand valve first stage !

So, if you order this set from Europe (Amazonfr) you will get the "new set?" Correct? I ask because I want this set and Amazon France is $100 cheaper than the US.

There's a note on their page for this set (in French of course) that seems to translate that any box ordered from them after December 18th are the "good" sets.

Perhaps one of the French speaking board members can verify that, but that's what a web translator indicates.

Thanks Eric, that's kind of what my terrible french was making out. Think I'll go ahead and order the set, I have zero Miles in my collection right now, so this is an ideal way to get back in the game.

This is how Google translates the passage:

We found that some caskets' The Complete Columbia Album Collection (70 CD Box + 1DVD) "by Miles Davis showed defects in quality packaging. After checking our stock, we inform you that the items available are now healthy. If you order this product before December 18, you will receive an email telling you how to do to exchange your box for free if he would present defects. Thank you.

So, trusting in the French, I went ahead and ordered the set for $225.27, which is a great buy.

Received my box today from France. Pretty good shape, even though the packaging was sparse. Two slight splits on the front flip-down corners of the box, which I repaired with some clear tape. The box is sturdier than the early ones that I've seen. Cds are in cardboard sleeves, but glue is still a problem, I had fourteen cds with residue. Still, very happy with the purchase and the price, which is on par with AmazonUK. Positives: It is very nice to have the original art work, first time I've seen some of the covers, eg. 1958. As I was checking all the cds, I became more and more astounded by Miles, it was one great album after another. This man was a true artist for the ages.

Are you sure you got a newly manufactured box?
