Okay so this is NOT a Membran/Definitive knock-off????

I picked up the Artie Shaw Membran and the sound (and the lack of liner notes) sucked.... <_<

Because it's apparently being released by a European division of Sony/BMG, similarly to the 1930s Ellington, etc. boxes released last year:

Nope, not Memran (thank God).

If you read around here once again, you'll see that we are talking about two different sets.

Yep, and this is definitely a Sony issue--look carefully at the photo of the back of the set on the various Amazon sites, and note that on the Amazon UK site, the label is listed as Columbia.

Okay Good..

What's friggin' amazing (or depressing depending on your POV)... is this same set went for what? $200 when it came out? Somehow I don't think Billie's voice got any worse in the last few years...

I don't know if this is the plan.. to reissue these prized/large boxed sets for chump change     ... but I'll take it... :tup :tup :tup

Amazon US now has the following statement on the page for this set:

This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

Don't know what's up with that--my preorder is still pending, and shows a shipping estimate of October 13th.

Could be that the product listing is in error, and that the set will be available through Amazon US but has been delayed. Or, it could be that it will NEVER be available through Amazon US.

In any event, I just ordered one from Amazon UK for roughly the same delivered price as offered by Amazon US, and the UK site has them IN STOCK.

EDIT: About 40 minutes later, and the Amazon UK order is already designated as "shipping soon." :excited:

The booklet contains all the notes that were in the original, (I think so anyway),

Can we get a solid confirmation of this?

Yes, this does not seem possible.

The smaller booklet is 68 pages and contains the following;

1. Song Index

2. Ladies Day by Gary Giddens

3. Literary Lady by Farah Jasmine Griffin

4. Discography

5. Production Credits

Did the first big one have a track by track analysis as well?

Yes, by Michael Brooks, if I remember correctly.

Yes, they were by Brooks, and were the same liner notes that accompanied the individual "Quintessential Billie Holiday" volumes that Columbia put out in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

So they were not new ones commissioned for the big box???

One UK Marketplace seller now has this listed on the US Amazon site for $27.16 brand-new (plus $2.98 shipping), for anyone who wants to get this for the best price yet. Amazon US, itself, still seems not to be selling this, so I'd highly recommend that those who preordered it make inquiries about the status of their orders and--if necessary--make other arrangements (e.g., Amazon UK).

They would have to be re-done and amended at least, I figure... or did those (four?) Quintessential discs contain all that was on the big box? Rather unlikely... I think I found that "Literary Lady" essay quite weird... they should rather have dropped those essays and included the track-by-track in the small box, in my humble opinion. But then of course if this is directed at newbies and casual fans, maybe they prefer having some more general information over the specialist and detailed analysis that's in the track-by-track comments of the big set.

There were at least nine Quintessential discs Flurin. . . nine I think. The notes didn't have to be altered much. Not sure the live material was on these discs, but it was in a former box set from Columbia with notes by Brooks.

Ooops - my bad! I thought it was just some kind of a compilation series, wasn't aware it was (almost?) complete! I guess I'm too young to have known... :w

Go for it, folks (organissimo referral-fee link):

What did they charge you for shipping?

Total with shipping was $33.44. Amazon UK has a function when you check out that will convert the charges into US dollars (based on the current exchange rate). The total includes a small service charge imposed by Amazon (which your credit card company would normally charge you anyway if you purchased in pounds). The conversion is optional, but the total for me with the conversion was $33.44, so I went for it.

Also, keep in mind that when you provide your US address at checkout, the 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) will be deducted from the product price, so that the price in pounds actually will be less than what is shown on the product page.
