Sirone

ESP just tweeted this:

@espdisk: We just got word that Sirone passed away in Berlin. His music touched all of our lives. RIP !!!!! A MAJOR LOSS.

That is too bad. I understood he was quite a fisherman, as well as being a fine bass player. This biography and discography looks fairly complete to me. http://www.jazz.com/encyclopedia/sirone-jones-norris-sirone Of the great Revolutionary Ensemble trio only Jerome Cooper is still with us.

Met him when he was still known as Norris Jones and playing with the Marion Brown quartet at the start of his career.

Reacquainted with him when he showed up with Pharoah Sanders in 1968 at the Antibes-Juan les Pins festival.

An impeccable musician and a gentleman!

Too sad. I've seen him few times (with the Revolutionnary Ensemble in the seventies and Cecil Taylor).

What is strange is that he died just after he had anounced that he was going back to his real name. Maybe he was knowing that he didn't have much time to live ahead of him?

I have an original, great album. Hopefully we will see an RE of the much, much rarer Abdul Wadud LP soon.

Sirone did have one of those just perfect discographies. A few performances of note that haven't been mentioned here:

-Life Rays w/ Walt Dickerson & Andrew Cyrille
-High Two with Dave Burrell
-many excellent dates with Charles Gayle, including the interesting and very underheard Silkheart quartet with Billy Bang & a young Tyshawn Sorey
-Beneath Tones Floor with Oluyemi Thomas & Michael Wimberly
