Not sure if it's been mentioned on the board or not, but there's a new posting of the Cecil Taylor Quintet at the 1965 festival -- with Bill Barron, Jimmy Lyons, Henry Grimes, Andrew Cyrille. Three tunes: "Steps," "Unit Structures," "Tales (8 Whisps)" Total of nearly 50 minutes. Just listening to the opening of "Steps" and it's pretty incredible.

Has this one been noted yet?

George Russell Sextet Concert

7/03/64

George Russell - piano

Thad Jones - cornet

Brian Trentham - trombone

John Gilmore - tenor sax

Steve Swallow - bass

Albert Heath - drums

Special guest, Sheila Jordan - vocals

Just listening to that on my phone and wondering who the tenor player was. (Most sets have a long write-up giving personnel and context but I couldn't find it for this one.)

Oh shit, this motherfucker is BURNING!!!

The band sounds better - and is recorded better - the any of the Roulette albums of the same period.

I can only imagine catching these guys on a club date...must've been something...

More concerts available:

Lionel Hampton Quartet

Newport Jazz Festival 1969

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers

The Dave Brubeck Trio with Gerry Mulligan

Eero Koivistoinen Quartet

I was not familiar with Eero Koivistoinen (perhaps I should?), but this was an excellent set, I thought.

last night I purchased their Teddy Wilson gig at the Great American Music Hall from 1977.. Figured for $7 it was a good way to determine whether I might be interested in the Storyville box....

More concerts released:

Newport Jazz Festival 1955

Teddi King

*Woody Herman & Erroll Garner

Newport Jazz Festival 1972

Freddie Hubbard Quintet

Oscar Peterson

Newport Jazz Festival 1973

Benny Goodman Quartet

Donny Hathaway

Herbie Mann Group

Ruby Braff-George Barnes Quartet

*This concert has been removed, but not before someone had commented that Woody Herman and Erroll Garner sounded remarkably like Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck...

The Benny Goodman concert reunites the original quartet for what must have been the last time. Gene Krupa was very ill and would die just a few months later. An eyewitness account relates that Krupa fell over his drumset when Hampton patted him on his back at the end of the concert, and he had to be helped up.
