Django Reinhardt Centennial

January 23, 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Django Reinhardt.

French record companies are scheduled to release a number of boxes to mark the Centennial.

Among them:

Le Manoir de Ses Reves from Harmonia Mundi/Le Chant du Monde. Nothing on their sites yet. This is a 26-CD set very similar to the recent release 'Les 100 ans du Piano Jazz'

Djangologie from EMI France, a 20CD which will incorporate all the material from La Voix de Son Maitre/HMV/Pathé-Marconi. It will be more complete and cheaper than the Mosaic Django Reinhardt box.

Django Forever, a 5CD box from Universal France.

Is that 20 CD box a reissue of kinds of the old "Djangology" 20LP set? I once almost bought it, but the time I had made up my mind it was gone...

MG, I'd assume most of the Universal 5CD set would be taken from the Jazz in Paris discs (which have also been boxed, I think?), and as brownie said, some of the Mosaic might be in the 20CD set (but the Mosaic is Swing/HMV, that's Sony/BMG, no? The 20CD set is EMI! Confusing!)

I'll jump for one of the large sets once a few more details are known.

So far I have all the Jazz in Paris discs, the Mosaic, and Definitive's 4CD set collecting all the recordings Django made with American musicians (including the fine All Star dates that were also on a single Blue Note CD - you ought to look for those sessions, MG, they include the classic recordings with Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter and others!)

All the music that was on the LPs will be in the box. I have not seen a track list but the cover of the box is exactly like the covers of the LPs so it should have everything!

I guess this is a likely candidate for acqusition then... if you find out more about the 26CD set, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one to appreciate more info!

bump.... I've seen the EMI "Djangologie" box here, but none of the others so far.

Just found a setlist of the Chant du Monde 26CD set though - I assume this roughly covers what the Fremeaux discs would cover? Would be way cheaper to get this (49€ on amazon.fr) than the two Fremeaux sets, but I assume Fremeaux has the better documentation? Or how was that other Chant du Monde box you mention, brownie? Complete discography included? Any liner notes?

I have a lot of Django in my collection. Does anyone have thoughts or opinions about the JSP/Ted Kendall Django on the Radio set? I know I don't need it, but .... (Most of you know how that goes.)

Djangologie from EMI France, a 20CD which will incorporate all the material from La Voix de Son Maitre/HMV/Pathé-Marconi. It will be more complete and cheaper than the Mosaic Django Reinhardt box.

Has anyone here bought this set yet? If so, how is the packaging? Mini LPs? Digipaks? Jewell Cases? Just trying to get an idea of how compact/unwieldy it is before I order. Thanks in advance.

Minimal in the sense of lacking personnel info? I would imagine that the EMI has better sound, though, since EMI made the original recordings.

It seems this Djangology 20 cd set from EMI primarily duplicates the contents of the OLD 20 lp Djangology Collection (sort of chopped in terms of years covered but augmented at the same time with extra tracks in the 10 cd version from the 90s). There's even a 1970 copyright stamped on the individual cds. I suppose if the price is right it's ok, but 14 or so tracks a cd with many running to just 40 minutes or so?? It's not like the lp reissues are the originals in any sense, so I don't understand this misplaced fidelity to an earlier compilation.

The samples I've heard of the sound seems very much like my old lp set as well in terms of eq, noise reduction, which to me sound like the old techniques of covering up clicks and pops by muffling the eq...so, based on my samples, they do not seem to have gone back and updated the transfers, which sorely needs to be done, but this is a very preliminary reaction not based on comparisons yet! In terms of completeness, this set is not anything like what it should be, and NOT what looking at a 20cd count would lead one to believe!!

I'm not so familiar with the sonic quality on the Fremeaux sets, but they're certainly pricey but FAR more complete that this EMI offering. I would say JSP is a reasonable choice...I'll try and do some comparisons...

I haven't heard anything from this Django set but, in my experience, EMI hardly ever has better sound on anything.

Thanks, guys. I was thinking this might be a cheaper (not to mention more extensive) route to the material than the Mosaic, which I don't yet have, but your observations make me think I'll probably get the Mosaic and forego the other material. I already have the first JSP box, all of the Jazz in Paris releases and the RCA Bluebird single. Add the Mosaic and that's probably as much Django as I'll need.

Correct. They tend to apply noise reduction very generously to older stuff; the EMI Artur Schnabel box is a prime example.

I still have the EMI/Pathe Djangologie LPs, but I went the Frémeaux route and have not looked back since.

The sound is excellent, the listings are as complete as can be and everything (and I mean everything) is there. The price of the Centennial boxes are quite reasonable.

If I had to do it again, the Frémeaux sets would be my choice.
