David "Fathead" Newman - way back in Jan.

Hank Crawford basically a week later

I was so sorry to find out about David Newman; I was supposed to see him that Dec. but obviously his health forced him to cancel the gig.

Ian Carr (probably the greatest jazz trumpet player that the UK has produced)

For sure, one of the best - and very much missed.

I'll add also Vic Lewis - stalwart UK impressario for West Coast Jazz.

and Gerry Niewood in that Bufallo plane crash.

Didn't a 3rd member of the Charles band die around that time?

Aw man!!! I didn't know that! He's always been my favorite of the APP vocalists, especially "Prime Time." Man, that's a bummer..... :(

Charlie Mariano

Charlie was one of my favorite altos. He is particularly effective on Elvin's Impulse album "Dear John C". (A fantastic album. Check it out.) In particular, in an era when there were several altoists recording with intonation that ranged from mediocre to absolutely terrible, he played in tune. (Blue Note was a particularly bad culprit when it came to that.) I don't really know what the problem was; it's not exactly difficult to play the alto in tune.
