Legion of Honor for René Urtreger

The New Year list of recipients of the Legion of Honor includes pianist René Urtreger who was made a Knight in the Order.

The Order is the highest decoration in France.

Too many persons who make the list these days are not worthy of it.

Not the case for Urtreger. One Frenchman worthy of the honour!

The 75-year old Urtreger is still making clubs (and records) appearances and plays better than ever!

Congrats to Mr. Urtreger (is he Sire now, or what's the title they use? Knight? :-) )

A trio set recorded in December war recently broadcast on France Musique (on Jan. 2, to be exact)

It can be streamed for another few days (until Jan. 9, I think) here:

Edit: move forward to ca. 10:00 to hear the live recording!

As you said too many people get this reward these day, even Michel Leeb got it!! But I am glad for Mr Urtreger

Michel Leeb was bad enough. At least he ired the New Basie band for a record and concerts but what about a nothing person like Daniela Lumbroso. The mind reels

Urtreger remains Monsieur Urtreger.

Here is another video (from 1961) of Monsieur Urtreger:

Blues for You

with Sacha Distel and Jean-Louis Viale! Is that Pierre Michelot on bass???

Brownie, would he not be something like "Monsieur le Chevalier" Urtreger? Sorta like "the Reverend Mr. Smith"?

Non! Non! Plain 'Monsieur Urtreger' he remains

Is René the first French jazz luminary to receive this honor?

Stéphane Grappelli, Martial Solal, Didier Lockwood, Michel Legrand were previously honored.

The 3 CD set with Rene Urtreger / Henri Texier/ Daniel Humair - HUM - is one everyone who

likes the playing of Rene Uretreger will want to get. A terrific set from 3 different time periods.

Yes, and the four Carlyne reissues from the seventies... and the one later Carlyne, and the Black & Blue trio album, and "Onirica" and the one on Minium... all recommended!

And of course the early "Joue Bud Powell" which was reissued in the Jazz in Paris series!
