The remarkable pianist Earl Wild died at his Palm Springs, Calif., home on Saturday. He was 94.

Sad news,

His was the first recording of Rhapsody in Blue I heard on record.

Wild recorded a wonderful set of Rachmaninoff concertos with Horenstein and the Royal Philharmonic. Available on Chandos (cheaper set) and on Chesky with better sound.

I've enjoyed these recordings since 1968. My Readers Digest lp set is supreme!

I'll remember Earl Wild as one of the few pianists capable of playing at least some of the Beethoven symphonies in the Liszt transcriptions. A remarkable achievement.
