I was browsing through some old video's of the Tubby Hayes Big Band, from some old bbc jazz programmes and to my great pleasure there was a lot of Jimmy Deuchar playing bothe the trumpet and the mellophonium. Its an amazing instrument with a very nice sound. Here are the links for seven pieces on youtube, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did

Bought his "Pub Crawling" when it came out over here on Contemporary in maybe 1957 (thanks heavens for record stores with listening booths). Liked it a lot then and have never wavered. Interesting how much those Scottish-English players were into Dameron-like writing back then, more so than most boppish American players were in '57 (or maybe ever). I would assume that Deuchar, individual as he was, greatly admired Navarro.

BTW, for those interested, the Tempo sides released as PUB CRAWLING on Contemporary in the US are available on the following Jasmine CDs:

Jimmy Deuchar, SHOWCASE

As Larry noted, excellent stuff.

The Acrobat issue does not include all of the tracks available on JASCD 621 (OPUS DE FUNK), JASCD 616 (SHOWCASE) and JASCD 624 (PAL JIMMY)

Hey Soulpope,

Noticed you asked in November, so you probably already know this, but just in case...

Have you considered the "Jimmy Deuchar - Three Classic Albums, EP'S and Bonus Tracks" set on the Real Gone Jazz label. Definitely a European PD label but in desperation I finally bought this set. Damn things are ubiquitous in Australia and cost a pittance.  I'd much prefer legit copies of this material but for the time being this does the job.

Also this set might be a cheaper alternative to the Jasmine CDs (I assume they're a PD label as well). It includes the albums "Showcase", "Pub Crawling" "Pal Jimmy" plus tracks from various EP's (incl. with Victor Feldman, etc). Around $10 for a 4-CD set.

All the tracks on the Jasmine Opus De Funk CD (mentioned earlier in the thread) are also included except the 2 (bonus) Ronnie Scott Quintet tracks - I'lll Take Romance and Speak Low.

For the EP's a better option is the Zoot Sims - Cookin' album. And it's actually available from Japan! Cookin' is combines tracks from Sim's other LPs "Zoot At Ronnie Scott's" (except the 2 Harold McNair Quartet tracks) and "Solo for Zoot". I haven't come across proper digital versions of those, so the Cookin' CD works for me.

A good option for those Deuchar EP's (with Feldman) would be the Jimmy Deuchar "Thou Swell" CD and also available from Japan.

Forgot to mention that only one track (Desperation) on that Japanese "Cookin'" CD features Jimmy Deuchar. The original LP "Zoot At Ronnie Scott's" had 3. The Acrobat CD issue of Zoot Sims - At Ronnie Scott's 1961, has them.

Also, playing this "Cookin'" disc now and was reminded that the Zoot track Love for Sale (without Deuchar) is edited to half it's length. Damn!
