JSngry
Picked this up at AllAboutJazz Musical director at North Texas State University (legendary) jazz bands. Link Jsngry, did you pass through his bands? Never made - never pursued - the "1:00 route", but was definitely there during Breeden's heyday (74-79). The man's dedication to his vision as he saw it is certainly noteworthy, and cause for respect to be paid at whatever level one sees fit. It was a dedication that never waned in its intensity. I will say this - seeing him (all band rehearsals save a very few were open to student attendance, a most admirable policy, I believe) literally turn the 1:00 over to Lyle Mays in the 74-75 year was one of the most interesting - and downright fun - ongoing musical experiences I've ever seen. Whatever Breeden's own "bag" was, his willingness to put it aside - surrender it, really - to serve the development of what was a very unique and special talent is something that should be noted as long as the man's name is mentioned. BeBop
I've got a a couple of the Lab Band LPs at my father's house. Kinda wish I had a digitized version on my portable. But it never seemed like the right thing to do at the time. I was around only for the "transition" days, '79-'81.
david weiss
I got to North Texas a couple of years after he retired but his presence was still felt everyone. He was an institution there and greatly respected.
