"Jazz From Monterey: 1958, Birth of a Festival"

7 posts in this topic

This past weekend's Night Lights show, Jazz From Monterey: 1958, Birth of a Festival, is now up for online listening (just ahead of the 2010 festival). It features live performances from the Jimmy Giuffre 3, Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Billie Holiday, Cal Tjader, and Dave Brubeck.

Coming later this week: "Goin' Up: Jazz in the Space Age."

Listening just now and wonder why the entire Billie Holiday set has never been legitimately released. I know it got terrible reviews but this one song sounds pretty good and not that different than other latter day Lady Day.

I haven't heard the entire Holiday performance from that festival, but I agree with you, Medjuck. Does the Concord/MJF label have plans to release more music from the Monterey vaults?

I seem to recall that there was a release of her Monterey performance on the Blackhawk label in the 1980's.
