Lennie McBrowne albums discussion

Recommended Posts

funny i had been thinking about these records too these days... when i was an exchange student in San Diego in 1996 i went to the publich workshop Daniel Jackson, the Four Souls' saxophone player, gave there once a week... in a sense i didn't learn much, even at my "peak" two or three years later i couldn't play a meaningful solo over All the Things You Are, but still, this workshop was easily among the best things that happened to me then or later and i will always be grateful for the great time i had there (not to forget that he didn't send me away :) ) last week i discovered that by now Jackson has for albums up on CDbaby, on of which i have already ordered but it's not yet there, the sound samples i liked a lot...

btw, he also appears as a sideman on some other records on cdbaby Chuck McPherson's Wisdom and Jason Jackson's Going Home... i guess i will make a discography some time in the near future... of Jackson's "classic" recordings with the Four Souls afaik nothing (except for a track on some compilation) has been reissued, two of his composition however appeared on James Clay's Double Dose of Soul and have been reissued... maybe he'd have gotten an album in the Cannonball Adderley Presents series on Riverside if that had continued... he has two homepages, none of which is particularly informative

(check out the nice photo of the froebel brigham group´that recorded for savoy featuring Harold Land (and Daniel Jackson's brother Fred Jackson) in the gallery section)

and

there are also two extensive interviews online

(with a focus on Jazz in San Diego, Harold Land...)

and... (unfortunately the second one is not online anymore only this brief excerpt, hope i saved it somewhere

there is also a clip on youtube featuring him live with singer songwriter Chuck Perrin

hope its length doesn't make this post off topic...

just found the New York Times Obtiuary for Don Sleet

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html...752C0A961948260

Don Sleet, a jazz musician who was Downbeat magazine's trumpeter of the year three times during the 1950's, died Dec. 31 of cancer. He was 48 years old.

Don Sleet, a jazz musician who was Downbeat magazine's trumpeter of the year three times during the 1950's, died Dec. 31 of cancer. He was 48 years old.

Mr. Sleet performed with Stan Kenton's band in 1953 and went on to appear with the Lighthouse All Stars and the Shelly Manne All Stars. The magazine recognized him as trumpeter of the year from 1956 through 1958.

is the info in bold correct? (seems a bit silly to ask...)

Has the Riverside LP Eastern Lights ever been released on CD (OJC treatment? - can't seem to find it listed anywhere & the Lord Discography has no CD details)

BTW he also released a Pacific Jazz LP - LMB & The Four Souls (PJ 1) Elmo Hope did some arrangements for this session; also this looks like it has never had a CD release

These two LP's appear to comprise his total output

I'm surprised the Spanish have not yet released a CD coupling both of these LP's

I started looking for these Lenny McBrowne LPs after 'discovering' Don Sleet when Carrère France released Sleet's 'All Members' on their Jazzland France reissue label several decades ago.

Found both of them and very happy with them.

Chris Albertson wrote the liner notes for the Riverside album and may shed some western lights!

definitely high up on my wantlist, i met the group's tenorist Daniel Jackson in San Diego in 1997 (attended his public workshop a number of times, it was really generous he let me be there given my age and talent :-) ) which was one of those experiences that really count for me... in the meantime, Jackson has a number of album on CDBaby

as an aside, while i'd love to have those two albums together on a spanish cd (only realistic alternative i guess), i also still like the idea of a Cannonball Adderley Productions set from Concord which would also include the Joe Alexander, Roosevelt Wardell and Paul Serrano albums (and a bunch of others most of which have come out on cd by now)

Yep, those Cannonball Adderley Productions albums were nice. Though not essential, I'd love to see them on CD.

Totally off-topic, but I'd also like to see a few Vanguard albums on CD, such as both Dave Burns albums and the Bill English and Ron Jefferson albums.

oh yes, there was an mp3-only reissue at least of the first three recently but that's not the same thing...
