2011 MLB Season

Wow--that might've been the most incredible night of regular-season baseball that I've ever followed in my life.

amen, brother ghost!!!!!!! the lady named chance or happenstance at times puts on unbelievable displays.. NO ONE could have scripted last night.....

This is a slightly condensed version, but only a minute or so elapsed between the final Baltimore-Boston score flashing in Tampa Bay and Longoria hitting the walkoff homerun:

Rays fans react

Realtime version

one of tv and baseball finest hours---the rain delays and such worked out so splendidly. the stage was set so beautifully.....

and the players read their roles.

You are right that was a great night of baseball, but lets face it if the Yankees played all

their regulars and put MO in at the end , the Rays would have lost too.

What about Crawford, he can't catch that ball?

Manny could!

Seriously,Crawford may be the best all round athlete on the club and he dives for the ball as if it's a hand grenade.

I kept flipping among the Braves, Yanks and Bosox last night and it was one of the most exciting nights of baseball I've seen in a long time. No scriptwriter could have come up with this, the plot twists and surprises were amazing. Even using mostly AAA pitchers I thought for sure that tha Yanks would win, just as I thought for sure that Papelbon(he looks like a psycho serial killer on the mound) would get the save.

I wonder about Crawford myself on that attempted catch. He was playing shallow, so if he doesn't make the catch the game is over, so why not dive?

Yankees earned the right to play the game the way they did...and I'm sure some of them enjoyed seeing the Red Sox not make the playoffs by their loss.

If I may be the party pooper here, I remember the '64 Phillies, though the '51 Dodgers were before my time. But back in the day a late season swoon meant losing the league championship. That was a big deal.

Now with the Red Sox the press is getting excited about a second place team dropping to third place. That's no big deal in my book.

One trillion plusses to you for this totally right message, as far as I am concerned. Lose the chance to go to the first of 3 rounds of baseball tournament going into October and even November? MLB must be kidding me!

Fine , Colts did the same thing with the Jets and how did that turn out ?

Reports are that Francona has been FIRED!...i am sure they will say it was amicable.

If so, it's the Red Sox's loss. What happened wasn't Francona's loss. The players have to own what happened.

You all deserve a final comment from me.

I told you they were fucked in April. I repeated myself about two weeks ago. I was RIGHT.

I've taken a long hard look at things and determined that baseball is not worth the mental or emotional energy I've given it. It is time to take a huge step away from it. There must be better ways to waste my time for the rest of my life and I am going to find them and pursue them. I already have a good idea of alternatives. Reading. Listening to music in the evening. Talking to my wife. Not obsessive worry about unimportant things like what free agent signs with which team or who won or lost.

In short, you won't find another post from me on an MLB related thread again.*

* With the sole exception of any discussion of Roger Clemens' perjury trial next spring, which I regard as a law and order, right and wrong issue rather than being MLB-related.

See you on the 2012 MLB Season thread :)

They should have fired Francona for the continuous spitting ;)

Seriously, maybe it's because I'm European, but I find that habit disgusting. Is it part of the folklore?? For me it takes away a lot of fun when watching MLB games on cable TV here.

Spitting is ubiquitous in baseball. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it reduces tension.

I have to respect Dan's frustration at this point. Still, I can't imagine when the pitchers and catchers report next Spring that he'll be able to refrain from a comment or two. Baseball gets in your blood. It would be awfully hard to just walk away.

With respect to spitting, that's a chewing tobacco thing. If you've ever tried it (and I did once) you'll realize quickly that spitting is the only viable option. The last thing in the world you'd want to do is swallow. Trust me on this.

That doesn't make it less disgusting.

Francona doesn't use chewing tobacco, what he does that is gross, he takes the bubble gum out of his mouth

and adds more gum and twists and grinds it with his fingers, then puts it back into his mouth.

He does this constantly.

It seems after the ownership meeting with Francona everyone left with out making a public comment ....so maybe they

are giving Francona the weekend to decide whether he stays.

Knowing that the certain pitchers (on their off days) were drinking beer in the clubhouse during games is pretty bad.

Francona talked to them about it ,but you got to wonder why he didn't ban alcohol from the clubhouse.

From what I heard, Francona's contract is up and the team has options for 2012 and 2013. They may just choose not to exercise the options and part ways.

S.I. is reporting that Francona will be launched. Seems premature to me, but they're saying it's a done deal. There's even some speculation bubbling up about the possibility of Joe Torre taking the Red Sox reins. How weird would that be?

I would love to see Joe Torre with the Sox, also the Sox brass likes Bud Black but he is tied up

thru 2013.

This years' Rangers have been uber-notorious for getting discombobulated by call-ups and other newbies they've never seen before, so there is that. But the Rays have also played us tough all year, so it just may be one of those times like against the Giants last year where we had the "better team" but ran into a team that was playing better baseball at the time, so...that's why they play the games, eh?

Either way, if the Rangers play tough the rest of the way and still lose, fine. But if it's going to be two more games of mental-lapse pitching and impotent bat swinging, that will be...disappointing.

Including injuries and lost players to the DL/IR, you just described the Giants' entire season right there.
