ghost of miles
Just had an exchange of PMs with White Lightning in which our ol' fave J.J. Johnson came up--what are your favorite J.J. records? I love most of the Mosaic set, PROOF POSITIVE, and THE TOTAL J.J. JOHNSON. And is it true that he wrote the theme to "Starsky and Hutch?" Jim R
It's hard to choose a favorite among J.J.'s recordings! I like the ones you listed (I think my favorite Columbia session is "Blue Trombone"), I love the Blue Notes, and also "Vivian" on Concord. "Tangence" was a beautiful CD as well... White Lightning
JoM, I believe it was Lalo Schifrin who scored the opening theme of "Starsky and Hutch". JJ scored several of the opisodes. BTW JJ also scored sevral of the episodes of "The Six Million man", whose opening theme was scored by Oliver Nelson, I believe.
Michael Fitzgerald
There are actually two Starsky & Hutch themes - Lalo Schifrin wrote the first year's theme, but the one I immediately think of is a piece titled "Gotcha" by Tom Scott, which was used from the second year on. I can't recall the Schifrin one at all. Mike Edited April 9, 2003 by Michael Fitzgerald
mikeb
Wow, Starsky & Hutch ... one of my favorite shows as a kid. Never thought I'd see it mentioned on this board! I believe Shorty Rogers also scored some material for various episodes.
JohnS
Yeah, let's hear it for JJ. I'll go for the Mosaic set, the Blue Notes and particular favourite Proof Positive. Of the later things I like the two Village Vanguard sets on Emarcy, Quintergy and Standards. But then he never made a bad record.

Alexander Hawkins
Don't know much of his stuff as a leader, but I really enjoy his playing on Sonny Rollins vol. 2!
John Tapscott
Things are Getting Better on Pablo, a date JJ co-led with Al Grey. Also, have to concur with Getz at the Opera House, the Village Vanguard CD's, and the Columbia recordings (now on Mosaic). Though JJ never made a bad record I never cared too much for Tangence. Robert Farnon is a great writer, but not for jazz, IMHO.
