I ordered the Glenn Gould Bach, but I have a feeling I'm going to get a cancellation on it.

"Hello, we regret to inform you that we are not able to send your order because inventory items are sold and title is no longer available. order not to make you wait too long, we have to cancel the order."

Mahler Symphonies 1 -10 on 15 Hybrid SACDs, and also a DVD, 28 dollars and shipping (unless you have prime).

I've only heard Zinman's 8th but even based on that alone I'd say go for it.

I went for it. I haven't been crazy about Mahler in the past, but everything changes. And I have a great SACD player to feed.

Tried my luck for the Zinman and the Perahia ... not holding my breath though.

And re-ordered the Tebaldi from amazon.it which has it 10€ cheaper than @ .de. Not that it matters much as the custom naz*s will strike anyway, but ....

And you're missing almost nothing except sweet oxygen so breathe deep and get better.

(Columbia-era) Bernstein Mahler destroys Zinman on every possible level (largely mediocre SACD is still mediocre) at the same price, just be glad we're past the insipd "Prince" Charles' watercolors-era which caused Bernstein CD collectors no small amount of grief in the 1990s/early '00s.

Also, the for small handful of very good recordings Perahia has made, there are dozens of dull, precious, misguidedly "limpid" ones, why bother when Murray's repertoire is almost uniformly standard & alternatives are many?

Yves Nat coffret >>>>>>>

it appears out of print at present but when the Marcelle Meyer coffret comes back, as it likely will, don't hestitate.

I'm not suggesting anyone shouldn't enjoy what they enjoy but Perahia has had 40 years of ubiquitous (by classical standards) marketing behind him and given that, his achievement, and his intredpidness, is pretty lacking. Again, a handful of better records, NONE of which include those drearily conducted, politely played Mozart concertos (and Mozart should never be dreary or merely polite)... Big box syndrome only reinforces a corporate hegemony that never should have been so blithely accepted in the first place. (Exept that promo copies, advertising, PR firms easily win out.)

Compare the relevant Murray to Zoltan Kocsis (except Murray never recorded Kurtag, nor anyone later than Bartok?)

Kocsis Schubert D. 960--

Kocsis Rachmaninoff sonata #2--

etc etc

Kocsis was on Philips for a while but except for a narrow window of Bartok, you'd hardly know it in the States, many of his releases "Special Import" only. His collected Debussy box on Philips is fantastic btw.

I don't do youtube and I'm not into a lot of comparisons. I like Perahia, you don't, that's fine with me. I'm still going to like him, and don't care if YOU think he's inept. We're both just a couple of guys on the internet.

Watching the DVDs of performance, rehearsal and discussion in this box set added to my appreciation of Perahia.

Listening this week to the Julian Bream box, that wasn't exceptionally cheap but it sure is a box I'm enjoying listening to and at the price I paid I'm considering it a bargain. Listening I came to the conclusion that Steve Howe of Yes probably listened to a lot of Bream as well (haven't researched that any).

I happen to like a number of different recordings of the Mozart Piano Concertos. Most recently I have been particularly positive about Rudolf Buchbinder's performances of many of the Mozart Concertos . One of the things I find interesting is to listen to a variety of interpretations of music I especially like, such as the Mozart Piano Concertos. I have recordings of one or more Mozart piano concertos by each of these pianists - Casadesus, Perahia, de Larrocha, Curzon Rubinstein, Moravec, Zacharias, Kovacevich, Gulda, Han, Brendel, Argerich, Fleischer, Kempff, Haskil, Istomin, Sudbin, Ashkenazy, Schnabel and Gilels.

Mom's highly arrogant "I am the only one who knows the truth" attitude quickly gets annoying. He is entitled to his opinion, but that is just what it is, his opinion. His approach at times reminds me of a person trying to convince others that his religious views are the TRUTH ,and those with a different position are heretics. That gets old very quickly.

You could just not read his posts if you have that kind of reaction. Easy enough to do.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Perahia's Mozart. It's technically proficient, it has a distinct point of view, and it is consistent within that. If you want Mozart that is more masculine and angular, that is fine. But there's nothing wrong with Mozart that focuses on beauty and liquid fluidity. I personally think he is my favorite for this, but I recognize that Mozart piano concertos are a packed field with lots of great choices. I wouldn't pick him as a first choice for anything other than Mozart. But he puts up a good show, even of works that are way out of his milieu.

Any thoughts on the Masterworks Heritage Collection box? It's inching down into dollar-a-disc territory, which tends to be my sweet spot.

There are a LOT of great recordings in that set. But you might want to check the titles to see if you have any duplication. A lot of those are already in many people's collections.
