"Bootleg" must just be the title, if it's a Sony Legacy release...

But, but, but Amazon tells NOTHING about the release. NO thing. Not a THING! Just "Miles Davis Quintet Live In Europe 1967" and send us $49.86.

Number of discs, from where, when, with whom and how? Nada. But pre-order now!!!

Not their problem - this is the info Sony supplied. Sony will send info as soon as stuff is finalized and Amazon will report it so they don't get "scooped". Happens all the time.

Oh, I know it happens all the time. Still silly... It's a "pig-in-a-poke" world.

I'd wager seventy-five percent who would buy it would buy it just based on that description. :)

I have several of the '67 concerts and this should be at least 5 cds. (Maybe with a DVD too?)

I wonder whether this means Sony doesn't have any of it in their vaults, and so are taking the "Ban The Boots!" route.

If this is an official Sony release (with sensibly remastered sound) I will buy it in a heartbeat. The "unofficial" recordings from this tour are some of my favourite Miles and they're the perfect complement to the Columbia LPs. With this band the studio/live dichotomy was particularly marked, and stuff happens live that didn't in the studio. In fact, these days, when I feel like hearing the 2nd 5tet, it's these recordings I tend to spin. Now once this is out and successful, can we hope that the 1969 European tour get a similar treatment? There's that version of Directions (Berlin?) where Miles and Jack do a Trane/Elvin Interstellar Space kind of duet... There are, of course, Andorran bootleg of some of this material, but a legit issue would be a REAL event, much more exciting than trumpet case CD sets.

Great news - the 1967 concerts are all great (not great - amazing!) - though if this is just one concert for $50 I'm not biting.

It's my guess it's the whole shebang. Though about half these came out on Spanish discs in the last two years, they're snoozing a bit but finally awake to what can be done officially. My guess only. . . .

I hope they use the best sources. For some of these shows (I'm thinking of Antwerp) there is a well-circulated inferior tape. I hope Cuscuna or someone else with an archivist's instinct is put in charge.

Guy

p.s. As an example of how to f--- this up, look at the European Trane box put out by Pablo about 10 years ago. Though at least in that case it was a problem limited to mislabelling of shows, not anything with the sound quality.

I reach for the '67 live material three times as often as the '65 Plugged Nickel. I think I only have three dates from '67 (on various late 90's silver-disc Euroboots), though I realize there are others out there. This would be a pretty substantial addition to the cannon; at least as important as the unreleased material that came with the box Columbia boxes.

Doesn't affect the validity of what you wrote, but it was Trane/Rashied on Interstellar Space.

Well, Miles had a Cannonball in his band after all. That would be of no use without also having a cannon.

Of course it's Rashied! Call it a senior moment. Actually, the Miles/Jack vibe is probably closer to the Trane/Elvin duets from the live European concerts of the early 60s, so maybe it was a logical slip to make. Come to think about it the only version of Antwerp I have is the crummy inferior tape (I think it's on the "Bird of Paradise" label), and I'd love an upgrade of that. Yes, I agree this is a different ballgame from Plugged Nickel '65. As wonderfully as the band plays there (Wayne particularly), Miles is not at his very best, which he certainly is on the 67 European sides. I agree that this stuff is essential, not just a sideshow, much as Parker's Roost/Birdland live material gives us dimensions of his music-making that's missing on the Savoy and Dials, as wonderful as those are.

I understand it'll be 3CDs and a DVD. According to Amazon U.K. it's a Sony Legacy set. The cover is up on Amazon. The subtitle isThe Bootleg Series, Vol.1.

It is about time that Sony extended the "bootleg series" idea past Bob Dylan. The Dylan stuff is great but it is not like he is the only Sony artist that has great music waiting to see the light of day.

I'd guess this includes Antwerp and Paris, since these are the best-sounding shows from that tour. I wonder what will be on the 3rd disc.

The difference is that all the Dylan "bootleg" material was owned and recorded by Columbia (now Sony) (and I know there were some certain exceptions to this, such as the Witmark release, but by and large this is true). The Miles material may well be radio recordings, audience recordings, and the like, that were never in Sony's vaults. It'll be interesting therefore to hear the audio quality of what they'll be releasing.

I am waiting for Sony/Columbia to issue a bootleg series for early to mid 1970s Santana.

Also, the likely audience for Bob Dylan live material is larger than that for Miles Davis live material.
