I've got the Rollins, Ayler, Sanders, Rhoda Scott (why were those tracks with Nelson omitted from the Mosaic?) and the Shepp.

Some of these are silly, the Ayler mostly so, as it would have been a good idea to combine "The Last Album" with "Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe", as they were done during the same sessions.

But then I say the Alice C. is silly... as "Universal Consiousness" was part of the LPR series (as was "Music Is the Healing Force")... anyway, more releases are being promised (in the booklet of the Rollins where due to the second album not having had a fold-out cover, there are two empty pages they used to print the listing and a note at the end that says "to be continued").

I'll skip the Hawkins, Tyner, Ellington and Blakey as I have all of them. Have none of the Jamal and Jackson but half of th Elvin (Dear John C) and three quarters of the Szabo (on the old Master Edition digipack of "The Sorcerer"), but I guess I'll grab that because the music is darn good!

Oh, and the covers are very nicely done inside!
These are 12-page booklets, so you get the crappy outside cover (p.1 and p.12) and you get the session info/tracklists (p.2 and p.11), and in between you get facsimiles of the foldout covers (p. 3 is the front of the first album, p.4/5 the inside, p.6 the back, same for the second album with p.7, p.8/9 and p.10). I didn't expect that after seeing the crappy front covers!

I think you meant Shirley Scott. But on the topic of Rhoda (and organists w/big band), have you heard the record she did with Thad & Mel?

Yes, sure I meant Shirley, sorry!
Must still be under the impression of that great night with Rhoda last November... just had that CD in my hands yesterday that she signed for me back then!

Thanks. I did a search, but didn't find any earlier threads. I'll ask Larry to merge the threads or lock this one.

It's not the end of the world if there's a couple of threads.

I have three of these so far, the Rollins, Sanders and Shepp. Bought each for just one of the sessions. These seem to be new masterings, done in Berlin, but when I compared Shepp's "Kwanza" to the US Verve edition, the sounds was very similar.

Can't make the threads about 2-on1 into a 2-on-1?

Is this International Irony Day or what?!?!

I get the impression that these are Euro only releases but I may be wrong

Have picked up the Fuller (was very interested in this one), Ayler (at last his final album)& Scott so far

Why couldn't they couple Shepp's For Losers with Things Have Got to Change?

That's exactly the problem I have with "2LPs-on-1CD" reissues like these: the couplings are often arbitrary and not always a good match.

Chuck
that's what I thought when I looked at the CD track listings (before buying) & compared it to my discography (Lord)
It appears that two tracks have been merged into one -> when I loaded the disc into iTunes & did a track search, one of the tracks had two titles
Can't remember which ones - I'm at work at present

They seem to have gone out of their way to pair an album that was readily available via the Impulse! 20-bit reissues or the Verve LPR series with one that was not. A waste in my book.

This is the track listing for the Fuller from Amazon (#3 should be 'Newdles').

1. The Clan 6:16
2. In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning 4:54
3. Newdies 7:37
4. The Breeze and I 4:00
5. Dear Old Stockholm 9:05
6. Ladies' Night 6:30
7. The Prayer/Taking A Chance On Love 4:42
8. Cabin in the Sky 3:53
9. Old Ship of Zion 3:15
10. Do What You Wanna Do 4:05
11. Honey in the Honeycomb 3:17
12. Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe 5:45
13. Savannah 2:39
14. Love Turned The Light Out 3:39
15. Love Me Tomorrow/The Prayer 5:18

1) The track missing from Cabin In The Sky is 'In My Old Virginia Home', based on the track listing for a Japanese import I found. However, it might have been merged with another track as pointed out. Does anyone have the timings from the LP?

2) For Soul Trombone, it looks like the track titles may have been switched based on the wikipedia entry which shows the timings in the same order but not the song titles.

Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

I am thinking about the Shirley Scott. Is that one complete?

Bertrand.

Mike Fitzgerald's discography site has the timings; I will put the tracks in the same order.

Amazon

The Prayer/Taking A Chance On Love 4:42
Cabin in the Sky 3:53
Old Ship of Zion 3:15
Do What You Wanna Do 4:05
Honey in the Honeycomb 3:17
Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe 5:45
Savannah 2:39
Love Turned The Light Out 3:39
Love Me Tomorrow/The Prayer 5:18

Mike Fitzgerald

The Prayer/Taking A Chance On Love 5:14
Cabin in the Sky 3:53
Old Ship of Zion 3:15
Do What You Wanna Do 4:05
Honey in the Honeycomb 3:17
Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe 5:45
Savannah 2:39
Love Turned The Light Out 3:39
Love Me Tomorrow/The Prayer 6:02

and 'In My Old Virginia Home' is 3:32.

There is a bit of confusion about the two medleys with 'A Prayer', but other than that the timings match up, so it seems like the track is just plain AWOL. Too bad. Perhaps the merged track Romualdo though he saw was one of the medleys?

Bertrand.

I have that Fuller Cabin in the Sky LP. It does have that extra track.
Full title is 'In My Old Virginia Home (On the River Nile)'.

I think it is, but I only looked at the facsimiles of the LP covers in the booklet.
There are a few tracks (two, I think?) with rather weak singing on the second album... but other than that, I thought it was pretty much ok.

Too bad about the Fuller, wasn't aware of that!

The artwork on these is just horrendous! Nothing will beat those 20-bit digipaks they did from 1995-2000.

As Flurin points out, you get the original artwork, front, back, gate-fold inside (if any) inside the booklet. And you get two titles which I think will sound better than the one title in that digipak series. For about the same price or less. I think an argument could be made this is a better series.

It is unfortunate that we have one title already in a lot of these twofers, but for new collectors these are a good boost.

Indeed!

#15 is "In My Old Virginia Home (On the River Nile)" - have the disc in my hands as I'm typing this (a co-worker got it... and don't worry, he's the only co-worker ever that I met so far that's into jazz...)

There are 16 tracks on the dsics, according the facsimiles of the two fold-outs, "Soul Trombone" had 6 tracks and "Cabin in the Sky" had then.

So without yet having aural evidence, it seems to be there!

For further information, check the site of Universal Germany here:http://www.jazzecho.de/musik/musikproduktdetail/product/176340/soul-trombone-cabin-in-the-sky/

I'm enjoying Soul Trombone, which is new to me; a really fine session in the early/mid 60s Blakey mold, but with everyone on good form.

I agree. A typical example of two albums that don't match very well, at least not in my view.
