Looking at the discography I'm astonished that so little of it has been re-issued on CD in the US and Europe. Even the Japanese re-issues are difficult to get hold of. Does anyone know why this is? Who owns the re-issue rights? BTW I've heard nothing back from Ace re my query about possible future releases by them.

I have these sessions on CD.

Stan Getz/Paul Quinichette/Wardell Gray - A look At Yesterday - Mainstream

Dizzy Gillespie & The Mitchell-Ruff Duo - Mainstream

Charles McPherson - Siku Ya Bibi - Mainstream

Clark Terry / Bob Brookmeyer Quintet - Gingerbread - Mainstream

Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer - The Power Of Positive Swinging - Mainstream

Clark Terry / Bob Brookmeyer Quintet - Tonight - Jazz heritage

Art Farmer - Homecoming - Lonehill

Unfortunately, I have never been able to find cd copies of the other 2

Charles McPherson recordings that were on the Mainstream label.

I imagine most people at Sony don't even *know* they own it. Still, Mosaic has been busy with Sony-owned material, so maybe we'll see some Mosaic Mainstream sets down the line. That would be nice. They could do a Sarah Vaughan box, maybe a Maynard Ferguson one.

In almost the same vein as Mainstream, how about Cameo (or Cameo/Parkway) for a couple of fine Maynard Ferguson albums... Were there other jazz releases on that label?

I hadn't realised that "Art Farmer - Homecoming" had been reissued on Lonehill. Thanks for the info, Peter, I'll treat myself to that!

BTW I managed to get hold of a copy of "Buddy Terry - Awareness" recently and it really is very good. Thanks to whoever recommended it.

Any other fans of Piero Piccioni's "The Tenth Victim?" That must be one of the rarest Mainstream albums. I found a copy for a dollar. It was later reissued by Easy Tempo with additional tracks but is already out of print. Stylized Italian lounge jazz with wordless female vocals. The film is one of my favorites from the 1960s.

Just found this thread. I'm a big fan of the Harold Land and Buddy Terry albums on Mainstream. And of course, Hadley Caliman's Iapetus. It surprises me that the two Buddy Terry albums have been released in Japan, but not the Harold Land records...those are amazing. I had no idea Sony/Legacy owned the rights to these...sure would be nice to see some US reissues.

This one I just picked up last weekend. I really like it - I mean the recording itself is a bit wonky (kind of murky with the rubbery bass noted prevously), but musically, it's excellent. A nice companion to the Hutcherson/Land collaborations on Blue Note.

And here's an old favorite I've enjoyed for years:

Greg M posted: They (Jazz Heritage) did a pretty good 2-cd set of Sarah Vaughan's Japanese concert stuff. Never quite figured that one out.

The Japanese concert (2 CDs) has been issued also by Columbia/Legacy and by Mobile Fidelity. I have both and while the Mobile Fidelity is a little more warmly mastered and my preferred version, both are quite nice (and unfortunately hard to find); here's what the cover art looks like for these:

I've got a number of Mainstream albums on CD - mostly Japanese issues from P-Vine

CHARLES WILLIAMS - STICKBALL

CHARLES KYNARD - CHARLES KYNARD

CHARLES WILLIAMS - CHARLES WILLIAMS

PAUL JEFFREY - PAUL JEFFREY

NIGHT BLOOMIN' JAZZMEN - NIGHT BLOOMIN' JAZZMEN

SOUL MAKOSSA - AFRIQUE

BLUE MITCHELL - GRAFFITI BLUES - This one's a Sony issue, but a South African release I got in Namibia :D

I'm sure there are lots more P-Vine issues.
