Blues, Boogie, and Bop

Reading about the "Bebop Spoken Here' set reminded me of another great set:

Verve's Limited edition of Blues, Boogie, and Bop. Chock full of great sessions from the 40s, this seven CD set is housed in a plastic reproduction of a 1940s radio and features an 80-page booklet and the following artists:

Albert Ammons, Helen Humes, Jay McShann, Jimmy Witherspoon, Walter Brown, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Professor Longhair, Julia Lee, Myra Taylor and cornetist Rex Stewart, Buddy Rich's bebop big band, Cootie Williams , and previously unreleased alternate takes from Ammons, Humes, McShann, Vinson, Cootie.

I mention this great set because there are 3 up on ebay now.

(and no, I am not the seller nor do I know any of the sellers)

Anyone else have this great set?

I bought this for the Eddie Vinson sides in the first place, but found out all the stuff in it is great, complete sessions, great notes, the Jay McShann stuff is very good. I recommend it, this is one that by far surpassed my expectations - it's a lot jazzier than the title suggests.

As for the Vinson, that was his prime time and some of the best he ever did!

This includes the complete 1940's Mercury sessions of:

Albert Ammons

Helen Humes

Jay McShann

Eddie Vinson

Roy Byrd (= Professor Longhair, some of his rarest stuff)

Julia Lee

Myra Taylor

Rex Stewart

Buddy Rich

Cootie Williams

and two never before or after released Mary Lou Williams tracks, which are a gem!

Thanks!

I got it here, by the way: http://secure01.entertainme.com/servlet/Pr...rvlet?id=408008

In case anyone else might try his luck. It took far longer than the 5-10 days, but then they sent it with DHL, two days shipping from the US, which is pretty fast!

And this seems to be the only site still listing it (I found it via google).

By the way: the notes in the booklet mention another Mercury set, designed to their 50th anniversary. I cannot remember the title. It's said to be a fifties Mercury box - anyone has that one? And what's on it? Just samples of different albums, or complete sessions as on the forties set? (the complete sessions is maybe the biggest plus of it!)

Yep, there was (is?) another huge Mercury set, containing (if memory serves) 1945-1955 sessions. I'm at work now, but when I get home I'll post a few details here - if it doesn't slip my mind, that is...

Hans, it says in the notes it's just the fifties in that other box. Thanks in advance!

I was wrong: I was referring to the 8CD Mercury set The Mercury Blues 'n' Rhythm Story, 1945-1955, not another jazz-based box.

This set includes sessions by Dinah Washington, Eddie Vinson, Gene Ammons, Jay McShann, Jimmy Witherspoon, Helen Humes, and many, many others, including blues and R&B artists.

By the way, I found this great thread of yours while googling for the 8CD set:

I was not aware of its existence, will have a look at it!

I found the information about the other Mercury box I was asking about. It's called "Mercury 40th Anniversary V.S.O.P. Album".

Here's the link:

http://microgroove.jp/mercury/VSOP-Album.shtml

It seems that much of its contents were later included as bonus tracks on Verve CD reissues, yet this would still be a cool box to have, I guess!

upping this one, as I have been listening to all the Albert Ammons and Helen Humes dates over easter. Great GREAT music! That session with Albert & Gene Ammons is smokin'!

Also some nice Johnny Hardee on the first Humes date, and some short moments of Rudy Williams on the second.

Then you have those two very nice Mary Lou Williams on the end of disc 7!

That box is a treasure!

This set is awesome!

It has some of very coherent music of the day and just perfect boogie-woogie piano works by Albert Ammons. Rhythm is so strong on some numbers you wouldn't' believe it's jazz rhythm section at all - still it cooks perfectly well for my taste.

And Gene Ammons is so beautiful by doing his understanding of Pres, playing alongside his father. Touching moments, really!
