New Box Set on EMI Icon Series

William Steinberg box set will be released on September 12. The box contains 20 CDs with his complete EMI recordings.

Amazon has it listed for $83.26, with a release date of October 11 in the U.S.. Not a bad price for a 20 CD box, but I think the price will come down quite a bit once the product hits the market and the resellers get into the act; at least I hope so. There are a few other titles in the Icon series. They generally get good but not glowing reviews. Nevertheless, if this box get down to about $2.00 per disc, I might go for it. I've always respected Steinberg's work. There was a sense of honesty and sincerity about it, and he was very good indeed in the Germanic repertoire.

Musically, they are all recommended. There are some sound problems with the early recordings of Alfred Cortot & Segovia but this is something I can live with.

Currently, it is $48.33 as a pre-order on Amazon.com. That's certainly more in line with what I would pay, though I certainly don't need it and should show some restraint.
