jazzbo
I can't choose! I think this week if I could have five cds of Ellington I'd choose my French CBS five cd set of material from '47 to '52. . . such good music, and such variety! John L
I can't choose! I think this week if I could have five cds of Ellington I'd choose my French CBS five cd set of material from '47 to '52. . . such good music, and such variety! A very interesting and unorthodox choice! That music IS good.

Good choices. For me it would be: New Orleans Suite Newport '56 70th Birthday Concert First Time: Meets Count Basie Such Sweet Thunder. I also like Jazz Party. Jimmy Rushing is having SUCH a good time! gregmo

My five: Blanton/Webster Great Paris Concert Far East Suite Blues in Orbit and an outsider in a way, but one I love for its fabulous recorded sound: Hot Summer Dance Edited September 10, 2011 by John Tapscott

JSngry
If you could have only 5 sessions, which ones would they be? I kinda look at it like his career was one unending session, so put the entire output of 5 bigass HDs, I'll do it like that.
dankarlsberg
Piano in the Foreground Blues In Orbit Anatomy of a Murder Piano Reflections Blanton/Webster Band There are a few others I would equally put in this list, so I guess 5 really isn't enough for me. sidewinder
[*]The Queen's Suite (because it was my first Ellington). That one and the 'Togo Brava Suite' nearly made my cut. A tough choice. I wonder if HRH stores the master next to her Mobley and Braxton Mosaics? Edited September 11, 2011 by sidewinder
A Lark Ascending
I wonder if HRH stores the master next to her Mobley and Braxton Mosaics? I suspect Margaret nicked it years ago in order to make an impression down at Ronnie's.
king ubu
The RCA Centennial box.The Mosaic 30s small group boxThe Mosaic 30s big group box Cheating, I know. But Blanton/Webster ain't a session, so... something like that... but add the early Brunswick/Vocalion ("Early Ellington" 3CD) and Okeh ("Okeh Ellington" 2CD) to the Mosaics... and then for me, add "Money Jungle" and the complete 50s Columbia box (non-existant), and then we'd about be there. If that's cheating, see mikeweil's answer for an alternative...
