In 1985, Miles Davis shocked the music world by moving from Columbia to Warner Brothers. He immediately started working on an album called Perfect Way after a tune by Scritti Politti, later renamed Tutu. When Tutu was released in 1986, it re-ignited Miles Davis' career, crossing over into the Rock and Pop markets and winning Davis two Grammy Awards - the album was a key factor in raising Davis' status to an international superstar. This box set includes the Warner Bros studio albums Tutu, Amandla and Doo-Bop, the Dingo and Siesta soundtracks and live recordings with Quincy Jones and the likes of Kenny Garrett, Foley and Adam Holzman. The set also includes four previously unreleased tracks, from the Rubberband Sessions. The liner notes were provided by leading Jazz critic Ashley Kahn. Can't seem to find it right now. As it is, this box doesn't hold much interest to me... I have all the albums except for the "Dingo" one, but including the mighty good Shirley Horn album. The best of the Warners is "Tutu", would have enjoyed more live material though, but then I have the Montreux box for that... and as for "Tutu" I just played the Deluxe edition for the first time yesterday... it had been lying around for several weeks now. Tutu, I need as an LP, because the first side is classic, the second side filler. Dingo & the live stuff with Quincy are pretty much useless to me. Doo-Bop, I've bought but have never listened to except for when cuts would get played on the radio, where they were pleasing enough. I'm not so sure but that I should leave well enough alone. That 5th disc looks interesting from a completionary standpoint, although I doubt there's anything really meaty there. The cut with Shirley is one with which I'm well familiar and...that might be the weakest cut on an otherwise outstanding album. $52.87 seems a little bit more than I want to pay for this. I mentioned it several times, I think: that was the first Miles I ever heard... my mom had (still has) the CD and enjoyed it a lot when I came out. I fell in love with it, must have been 10 years or something back then. Took me a while, "Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" was the one I really *got* when I was 13 or 14. From then on, I was on a journey of discovery that hasn't ended since... and "Amandla" is an album I still enjoy! Haven't done a track-by-track comparison yet, but the blurb says it's just four cuts that are previously unissued. What's the stuff on disc five, then? Not sure I have any of it besides the Horn track (and there I agree with you as well, the album's mighty fine, that track's merely ok). And again: if anyone can find those posts about the scrapped box that was planned some years ago, please post a link or quote them over here! Thanks! Pretty much Ditto, except I made the mistake of listening to Doo-Bop--the slightest recording of his career. I'd really have to go with Dingo for that dubious distinction. Hm, that's definitely not worth 50$... but I strongly assume the price will come down quite some. These 5CD (or 4CD) sets seem to go rather for 25-30€ lately.
