Chick Webb Mosaic Set announced

I think Chuck is right (he usually is). As David's post shows, it appears the future lies in streaming, and I suppose the quality of streams will improve, but what about the "stuff" that comes WITH the music--booklets with cool essays, discographies, and photos? I like having it in my hands, and I fear that era is indeed ending. Books too, I think.

A bit like saying 'I like the smell of steam trains'. A perfectly valid preference, but life rolls on.

I think David has his finger on where things are heading. I used to care for all the packaging but I realised that I rarely looked at it and most of the information needed is there via Google. Much as I don't need my sausages in a plastic tray, covered in cellophane and then with a pretty sleeve slid over the top.

In the Age of Austerity, if we're going to have the luxury of non-specialist music at all, then we're going to have to adapt to getting it from a source that minimises packaging and distribution costs.

I'm glass 3/4 full too - I think the curiosity to hear this music will still be there.

Back to Chick. I checked his discography published in "Ella Fitzgerald: An Annotated Discography" by J. Wilfred Johnson.

The following sessions will not be included as they are owned by Sony:

20-12-1933, 15-1-1934, 4-5-1934, 18-7-1934 (8 tracks) All for Columbia.

6-7-1934 (4 tracks) for Okeh

So hold on to your copy of either: Hep 1023, Classics 502 or Properbox 97.

Chich Webb made only 4 sessions as as sideman:

8-12-1932 with Louis Armstrong for Victor (on Louis Armstrong Integrale vol. 6)

7-5-1932 with Mezz Mezzrow for Victor (on Classics 713 Mezz Mezzrow 1928-1936)

3-3-1937 with Jimmy Mundy for Variety (on Classics 1200 Jimmy Mundy 1937-1947)

25-3-1937 with the Gotham Stompers for Variety (on Mosaic 235 Ellington Small Groups)

Mosaic's Scott Wenzel told me it looks like the Webb/Fitzgerald set will be released at the end of the year - 2012, that is :)

Will it beat the Hawkins set out?!

gregmo

That's the million dollar question!!! HAHA. At this point with all the delays, anything's possible. Sure can't wait until I am putting disk 1 of the Coleman Hakins set into my cd player!

My understanding is that Mosaic is working on an Earl Hines big band box.

Yes, I think I'll cop this one.

Then Erskine Hawkins, maybe?

MG

Erskine Hawkins would be a good follow up. I was thinking 30s Earl Hines would be a good choice too.

I suppose it will be pre Wardell Gray

Hines led a big band from 1928 to 1948. Wardell Gray was with Hines during 1943-1945.

I was aware of that but I'm wondering if the "choice" years that would comprise the box would exclude the WG period

No idea. Why don't you ask Mosaic?

Going through the Earl Hines entry in Lord's online disco I come to the follwing:

He recorded with his orchestra for what is now Sony/BMG during 1929-1934 and during 1937-1945. Around 130 takes were recorded.

In 1934 17 takes were recorded for Decca.

The lone 1945 Victor date is the only one with Wardell Gray for Sony/BMG. Further recordings with Gray were made for small labels apparently not owened by Sony/BMG. If they are in the public domain in the USA they might be included (like a number of sessions in the Hawkins box). But this is just my speculation I don't have info from Mosaic. Those small label recordings have been reissued on Classics 1041 'Earl Hines 1945-1947'.

Are there enough Teddy Wilson band dates (minus those with Lady Day since they're readily available) to justify a Mosaic set? I remember that Columbia Canada once did a 2Lp set, though it included a few of the Billie Holiday cuts. I was just listening to his sextet (IIRC) on an old AFRC Jubilee broadcast and they were great.

I looked this up too. He also recorded 6 tracks for Decca in 1935 if i'm not mistaken. Does Mosaic ever do combined Universal(Decca) and Sony/BMG sets?

They try not to.

As I scratch my head, I'm wondering what you thought I meant.

Well, you insinuated that Mosaic intentionally don't mix recordings from more than one major label, as if it was their choice. I guess there's plenty of difficulties in there and I know others have complained here about the fact that most of the time it seems to be impossible to gather recordings from more than one major under one roof - but I really wouldn't want to hold that against Mosaic (which again, is how I understood your post).
