Sonny Rollins help

I know the double RVG of Live at the Village Vanguard has more songs on it, but I was wondering if anybody had an opinion about the sound quality of the TOCJ's (1500 series) that were released individually in Japan. Any opinions or help would be appreciated

Thanks

Greg

I don't have a copy of the TOJC but I have heard the old seperate 80's discs and I now own the RVG.

The sound on the RVG is still a bit muddy but it is far better than the old seperates. On my system the drums are clearer.

Are you wanting to 'upgrade'?

I personaly have no desire to but I hope you find if it's worth it.

cheers, tonym.

There was a CD with the same cover but blue (instead of red or whatever you call that strange colour). This one (I saw it once in a store, but I'm happy with the 2CD RVG edition, cannot compare sound-wise) added the tracks not released originally, I think. Maybe this is the volume three you mention, couw?

I have the 2CD RVG (but none of the other releases of this session), but honestly -although I like the musik- the absolute quality of this re-master is poor compared to other sessions e.g. the K2 5CD Freelance Box set including Way out west and more....

So depends o n what your goal is... looking for an upgrade.. I personally would drop that...

Cheers, Tjobbe

EDIT: not sure if the base material allows great improvements in sound quality..

I haven't heard the TOCJ release, only the original McMaster and the RVG. You can get the RVG 2CD set for the price of one TOCJ disc. With this price difference, and given that the recording itself is flawed, I would not think too much about the TOCJ option. Rudy generally did a good job in remastering the mono Blue Note sessions.

A horrendous recording like this would never be released today.

No doubt, and an indictment of our times if ever there was one...

I'm still doing LPs on this stuff. Does the RVG have the added stage patter, and if not, where do I have to go to get it?

(favorite Rollins announcement is from that Dragon thing where he says, "Good afternoon, jazz fans, this is Sonny Rollins...", like he's Red Barber doing a Dodgers game. Priceless...)

I have the first TOCJ and the 2-disc RVG. The TOCJ sounds very fine, but the RVG, to me, is just as good if not, at times, "better" (more presence, air, etc.). The RVG gets the vote from me due, strangely enough, to the included stage banter and the not-ridiculous price.

Case closed: Buy the RVG and enter into the debate over Kiss Me Kate, no, Finnian's Rainbow, no, West Side Story, no, Star Trek. I love Theodore "Uncle Don" Rollins' playing on this whole set.

I don't like RVG's in general at all but I kept this one because the sound is OK and, JSngry, there is more stage patter from Sonny. The sound in general never bothered me and it is some of the best Sonny ever on record so I personally don't see where some of that other stuff is coming from.
