Dan Gould
AT least when I saw that 80s CD, I was smart enough to put it back in the rack.

Big Beat Steve
Here's a pic of Billy Mitchell the sax man with Joe Turner and members of the King Porter band (taken from the "Before Motown" book) in 1948. Is it only my imagination or does he look uncannily like young Wynton M., He Who Must Not Be Named On This Forum, here?

After some months I still often listen to his Xanadu 'De Lawd's Blues' and 'Colossus Of Detroit'. What a great, soulful and strong sax player. Free For All
When I joined Woody Herman in '84 we went to Europe with extra guests Zoot Sims, Sal Nistico, Bill Perkins and Billy Mitchell (Mitchell's not associated with Woody's band as much as the others- IIRC he was a last minute replacement for another player). That was a great trip, getting to meet and hear those guys. I gained a greater appreciation of all those players after that, especially Zoot. Love Billy on The Magnificent Thad Jones. mikeweil
I think Billy Mitchell and Thad Jones were a great combination! I love all their recordings together.

Big Beat Steve
Take a guess, Chewy. Whose records were selling better in the mid-60s?
