Joe McPhee

B. Clugston — where does your avatar come from? Any way we can see an enlarged version?

I think it's interesting that, this time around, Werner decided to put Clifford Thornton's name on the cover of the package. Poor Byron Morris — he was there too!

I rather liked the original cover ...

but I'm not going to complain ... the music's out again!

The avatar is a bizarre cover of a French 45 single of Ayler's New Generation/Heart Love. You can find a big version here on this excellent Ayler site: http://www.ayler.org/albert/html/newgen.html.

Speaking of covers, I'm with you on the original McPhee cover. With the exception of that brief phase of oddly cropped photos and split-sentenced type, I much prefer the look of the old hatArt 6000s. But if it's getting reissued, I can't complain...

opinions on the shipp- mcphee combination?

Up. Have just recently enjoyed the three McPhee albums I own: Linear B, Topology and Old Eyes and Mysteries and all of these albums are a wonder! Its a shame because I've had had these cd's for years and it takes such a long time to get back to them, but when I do, I wonder why I put them off to the side for so long. I really like Linear B a lot-what a great, great disk!

If you like those, you need to hear Oleo!

I have a very similar reaction to McPhee, incidentally. I don't listen to him that often these days, but I'm always knocked out when I do.

All three you mention are very good, but I like Linear B best of these, as well--great take on Shorter's "Footprints"!

3 hours ago, David Ayers said:

I listen to Linear B literally every day. The opener, Love Life, is my alarm tone!

This one is not available on Spotify, although most of hatarts are. I understand that Corbett vs. Dempsey acquired the rights to all the McPhee HatHut recordings, so I guess we will see it released eventually.

Sounds tempting but it would get me too obsessed about getting too much new music. I’ve found a balance over the years that’s been more healthy. I’m not listening to 30 hours of music a week like I was 20 years ago.

Some of these are my favorite musicians (certainly McPhee, Vandermark & Wooley) but they are still only a certain segment of new music that I buy. Plus I keep my new purcashes at a reasonable level. Plus Vandermark releases a bunch of music I’m not nearly as interested in as his large groups or some of his more abstract ensembles. I recently ordered a bunch of free jazz music through the famed trading web-site through a certain seller that allowed that seller to only charge a single shipping cost for 9 CD’s shipping from Poland to here in New Jersey. Not sure catalytic gives me access to that type of pricing. I paid <$100 for those 9 CD’s which will be my only new jazz/free jazz CD’s until probably mid December. These are CD’s that sell for $15+ on amazon plus shipping. Maybe a couple/three in November but that’s it.

that being said and being that this thread is about Joe McPhee - the last few releases with Joe (all on Not Two Records) are beyond stunning.

don’t get me wrong - I’m thrilled KV keeps offering access and recordings and his presence on the scene is close to priceless. His ongoing energy and commitment to this music over the last 25 years is truly without parallel.

FYI I would give my highest recommendation to his two recent duo CDs on Corbett vs. Dempsey, Keep Going with Hamid Drake and No Time For Sadness with Fred Lonberg-Holm. Joe is in peak form on both, but Keep Going in particular is something incredibly special and inspired. Not an overstatement to say it's one of his very best recordings.
