Holy bleep. Waiting with baited breath for the details on that one.

Hope Aric doesn't crap his pants when he sees it.

From the number it looks like the Mobley is 2 CDs.
Is that correct?

Not only does Aric know about it, but Sunnenblick hired him to write the liner notes.

Glad I clicked to reply to Chuck's post and found the image source. I had tried searching by "Hank Mobley" + "Newark 1953" and got zip on the interwebs and was really getting frustrated. But here are the details, such as they are, from cityhallrecords.com:

(2-CD set) To his early musical associates, Hank Mobley was considered a guru with a singular focus on music. This live recording, made at the popular Newark, NJ club, The Picadilly, precedes the 25 albums he recorded for Blue Note Records. The club had a motto, "If You Click at the Pic, You'll Click With The World." On this Monday night, everybody was clicking and Mobley clearly demonstrated that he was ready to launch his impressive musical career.

Release date: April 17 2012.

Two discs of live Hank in 1953. Holy bleeping Christ! April can't get here soon enough.

Chuck, do you have any inside info on sidemen or sound quality?

Two very intriguing releases. The Dexter doesn't look like it will have any great surprises, though it will be great listening, I'm sure.

Hank's tenor seems massive in that nice cover photo, makes Hank look rather small.

That was Dexter's band that recorded his best Columbia LP, Manhattan Symphonie, so it should be very good ....
But the Mobley is a big surprise. Unavoidable buy like the Lucky Thompson they released a while ago.

It's interesting to see a Mobley album not on Blue Note. There aren't that many, right? 2 on Prestige, 2 on Savoy, the "Monday Night at Birdland" on Roulette, and the late Cobblestone. Are there any others?

No idea if it has any significance but an extensive bio of Hank herehas this nugget:

He departed (Gayten) in 1951 and joined the house band at a Newark nightclub, where he played with pianist Walter Davis, Jr. and backed some of the era's top jazz stars.

Might Walter Davis be the pianist on this date? Roach hired them both after playing with the band, and that was all in the same time-frame. Seems as likely as anyone ...

Amazing find!

Uptown always surprises us with incredible discoveries, properly treated soundwise and with extensive research that turns into excellent and massive liner notes with plenty of graphical documentation.
