Lee Morgan's 'Candy'...

I caught the tail end of the Jazz Record Requests show the other day and came in during what sounded like a typical Blue Note hard bop tune.

"Sounds familiar", I thought. Anyway, turns out it was Candy by Lee Morgan from the album of the same name. .

I know many bop tunes were based on standards, but this one sounded so very familiar it was driving me mad. It's bound to be a really obvious one too. Haven't got that that session so I can't keep going back and listening to it.

Can anyone help and tell me which tune it is based upon?

cheers, tonym.

Yep. Big Maybelle had a hit with it, and I think Dinah Washington did too. Juke box fodder, this one was. Top-40 all the way in its day, before Lee go hold of it. Hell, my old man used to request it whenever he came to hear me work w/a female singer, so you KNOW it was popular!

The changes themselves are pretty generic, though. Think "Perdido" and you're there.

CANDY

words and music by Mack David, Joan Whitney and Alex Kramer

Candy, I call my sugar Candy

Because I'm sweet on Candy

And Candy's sweet on me

He/She understands me

My understanding Candy

And Candy's always handy

When I need sympathy

I wish that there were four of him/her

So I could love much more of him/her

He/She has taken my complete heart

Got a sweet tooth for my sweetheart

Candy, it's gonna be just dandy

The day I take my Candy

And make him/her mine, all mine

That sounds one hell of an album. Some of my favourite tunes on there; '... Paper Moon', 'You're Looking At Me' and 'What Is There To Say?'

Thanks.

This IS one hell of an album!

Guests Sweets, Stuff & Willie Smith and Juan Tizol add very much!

Get it! (There's been a recent remastering, by the way)
