aw jon - don't be a hater!!!!!!!!!!

ESPN: Ray Allen interested in joining the Heat?

a welcome addition particularly when considering that miller is having (career ending?) back surgery in the off-season.

:tophat:

Wouldn't Heat be looking for a bigger body to replace Miller, not a guard?

this is a good point - but i think if Ray is available the heat won't pass him up! :rlol

The only thing is, is that they don't need Ray (Heat has Lebron, Wade, Charlmers and Battiea to hit 3's) and if Ray still has that much left in the tank, the Celtics will keep him. If Ray is a free agent, then who is going to pay the money he would require for an aging guard?? Not the Heat, they are winning now. They don't need an aging veteran, they have young talent on the way up to groom with their present winning team.

Wade is a fluky (at best) shooter from distance and Battier may not have more than another year left in him - his defense is starting to slip and his shooting this year was below average for him until his crazy Finals performance. LeBron can shoot the long ball but he needs other guys who can pose consistent 3-point scoring threats so he can be effective on the block. Of the other guys who could fit this role, Miller has the obvious injury downside, James Jones is getting old as well, needs WIDE-open looks to be consistent, and plays slipshod defense, and Norris Cole hasn't proven to be a deep threat yet though his Finals performance was certainly encouraging. Allen has pretty good career rebounding numbers despite his size, so that could make him a good replacement for Miller at the 2 spot.

It will be interesting to see which route Riley goes - the last two years have sort of been along the lines of "find 'em old and cheap but get a bit more value for your money every year." I initially thought the big needs would be at PG and C but somehow everything worked with LeBron taking much of the role of running the offense and no true point guard (Chalmers and Cole are both 2-guards playing point out of necessity, like Russell Westbrook), and Bosh stepped into the role of center.

Steve Nash might be heading to Miami

I don't get it, why do you guys think the Heat now needs an aging veteran at guard??? Whether it is Nash, or Allen??? Just to help out the teams losing them?? The Heat (like or or not) won without an aging guard. They had a couple other players who are aging, Howard for one, but they have their veteran in Wade, youth in Charlmers, Cole and there is one other young dude. Do you guys hate the Heat that much that you think Pat Riley is going to start stocking up on aging guards??

They won but the overall lack of depth was definitely a nagging concern. LeBron cannot play 45 minutes night in and night out like he did in the Finals. The key questions are whether the guys who weren't really in the regular rotation can step up and deliver quality minutes to replace Miller and maybe Battier, and that's difficult to gauge right now. Terrel Harris showed some encouraging signs but barely played except in garbage time.

To me the real puzzle is what to do at center. Dexter Pittman looked overmatched throughout the year and Spoelstra appeared to have no confidence in Eddy Curry even though he worked his tail off to get in shape. If Curry puts in the mental effort needed to really be a good defender and work within the offense, the team could be really scary. Or maybe they will stick with more of the same and keep plugging Anthony/Turiaf/Haslem into the center spot.

Don't hate 'em at all. I enjoyed watching the Heat during their playoff run. I am dreading the outcry, though, if either Nash or Allen should sign with Miami. Just hate to see those guys burned in effigy in Phoenix or Boston.

I don't hate or love them, but I just can't see Pat Riley spending money like that regardless whether Nash or Allen "want" to come to Miami. I think the problem is getting a very capable "big" man to help out. If possible Riley is not going to lose Battiea to free agency. Battiea earned the right to stay (be paid appropriately).

Don't hold your breath on Curry, he's been a stiff for a long time and I don't see that changing anytime soon.If he worked his tail off to get into shape, that's the first time he's done that in a LONGGGG time.

Obviously this is sportswriting, so take some of the facts alleged within with a grain of salt, but it sure sounds like Curry lost quite a bit of weight to make it to the Heat. The guy is incredibly agile for someone of his size, so I suspect that most of the reason he never played was that learning to do things the Spoelstra way (especially focusing first on defense) took him a lot of time.

I don't see Nash going there, nor the Heat going for him. LeBron-Chalmers make for a fine PG (especially LeBron, point swingman whatever the hell superior position his is inventing). But I could see Allen if he's reached the point where he'll accept less for another ring, like what guys used to do for the Lakers. I wonder if the old "Laker discount" might have been transferred to Miami.

1) Both cities have warm weather and a party scene, though the Lakers do have Hollywood. But FL has the tax advantage. Not sure who wins, but maybe FL because of the taxes.

2) Pat Riley vs. Jimmy Buss. Advantage Miami!

3) LeBron racks up a huge number of assists. One of the biggest complaints was he'd defer the shot at the end of the game. The Lakers have an aging ball hog. (Not hating Laker fans, but you have to admit, LeBron shares, Kobe not so much.) You might get to shoot some if you go to Miami.

Near the end Shaq was smart to realize making a few million rather than 10+ is nothing to sneeze at, if anything it'll help pay taxes on the pile you already have that's making money. Ray might be like that. I really don't know. Basketball-ref claims he's already made pre-taxes / pre-agent $178, 000,000, and he did so in Seattle, Milwaukee, and Boston. If I were him I could see taking less than the highest offer and retiring in Miami shooting 3s. Or maybe he'd rather keep working at it for more somewhere with crappy winter weather.

This is a nice argument from Allen's point of view. I doubt Pat Riley is concerned with saving a player money and reducing his taxes. Miami is at their best when they are running, running. Riley is interested in championships and building a winning team with a future. You can't get that from an aging veteran. Besides Boston like Seattle, if they suspect Allen is going to same division or conference they will get in the way if possible and ostruct even if it means keeping Allen. Now Allen being a UFA is a different story. It will be interesting. :tophat:

Not counting old big guys as they're different, Riley has picked up old guards like Bibby, Hardaway, and Gary Payton in recent years. It's just one place on the roster (the aging 3 point specialist) for a team that isn't that old. But Allen may not be like Karl Malone when he joined the Lakers and be willing to sacrifice money for what's perceived to be an easier route to a title. Miami like many teams might be afraid of the bone spurs combined with age, but someone won't be able to resist the all-time 3 point shooter.

Quite a few rumors flying around before the draft. One is that Houston is trying to make a play for Dwight Howard. Gee, that's not very glamorous.

Wonder where Brandon Roy will wind up, and if he will be any good. Dallas seems to be in the running, along with Da Bulls. Chicago might make the most sense, Roy can come off the bench to fill-in for Rose, and wind up playing 12 minutes a game, and also being on the floor for the last five minutes of the game would give the Bulls a real scoring option outside of Rose.

Lakers sign Steve Nash

Not sure what good this move is

I don't understand this. All the analysts are like, whoa, Lakers are relevant again*, and I'm like, really? How much does Nash really have left in the tank? And how effective can he be when every single play will be Nash bringing the ball up and passing to Kobe? :P I mean defenses are going to adjust...

* Again, just pointing out how herdlike most NBA analysts are.

Man, Steve Nash is 38 years old. Lakers giving away 1013 1st round pick, 1015 1st round pick, 1014 2nd round pick and 2015 2nd round pick. Where is the future?? They won't be able to rebuild or trade. Kobe won't last forever.... Maybe they have figured out a way to get Bynum to act like a man instead of a spoiled child. :tophat:

that has to be one of the most harebrained nba trades ever. nash's back is a disaster. when he rests, he can't even sit on the bench.

am i smelling me a bynum et al-dwight howard "sign-and-trade?"

None of the picks were all that high anyway. I've always been a fan of Nash's game and I think it will be fun to watch him distribute to the other Lakers. It won't be enough for a championship unless they can swap Bynum for Howard and perhaps add a few other pieces to bolster the bench. Apparently Grant Hill will either follow Nash to the Lakers or retire.

Not gettin' younger...but neither is Kobe.

Kidd to the Knicks http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2012/7/5/3139633/breaking-mavs-cant-close-deal-with-kidd-as-he-accepts-knicks-offer

He'll give you some quality minutes still, so long as you don't ask for a whole lot of them.

The Knicks have looked rather foolish with all this PG nonsense over the last few days. Further proof, I'm afraid, that they'll never win anything.

Word is they're gonna compound all the (lin)sanity by resigning a mediocre (at best) PG to a heavily backloaded contract based on a 35 game playing sample from last year.

This is an interesting NBA off-season. Even I'm paying attention.

I kind of like the Nash move to the Lakers. Now if they can land Howard, they might be in business. (Unless the commish nixes the deal). <_<

How about the Knicks matching Houston's offer for Lin? That seems a little more dicey than the Nash deal to me.
