Posted 13 Apr 2012 For anyone interested, on April 25th Warner Japan will reissue 50 Atlantic / Vortex / Embryo Catalog titles as part of the Jazz Best Collection and all will be remastered in 24 bit. Some of these titles were previously reissued by Collectables and they can now go in the garbage where they belong (IMO). There will be a second batch of 50 on May 23rd. The highlight for me is Nat Adderley's Autobiography (first CD issue). Here is the link: http://wmg.jp/jazz1000/
Posted 13 Apr 2012 (edited) Thanks for posting this. The 1,000 yen price tag is very attractive, even with today's high yen exchange rate. In my opinion one of the "must have" CDs is Art Farmer's Live at the Half Note with Jim Hall. The Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh CDs are also worth getting, as well as the George Wallington, Phineas Newborn and Jimmy Giuffre discs. Fortunately, I already have all of them, either on individual CDs (no Collectables, those did indeed not sound good) or in a Mosaic set Edited 13 Apr 2012 by J.A.W. Posted 13 Apr 2012 Very few things of interest, to be honest... and most of these albums - those not rare in CD age - were also out in various European editions that sound alright to my ears - first there were the Original Sound digipacks, then the Masters digipack, and there were a few that were out in the US(?) series with the piano keys (the Bryant, for instance). Anyway, the Rufus Harley, George Wallington (was on Koch, wasn't it?), Roland Hanna, Jack Wilson, Eddie Higgins, and maybe one of the Bags' and that Steve Marcus (anyone knows it? how is it?) might be of interest... Posted 14 Apr 2012 I saw after I posted that the Adderley had been reissued but I gave up on Collectables years ago. I don't have a lot of these titles on CD so I am happy that they're getting decent releases. On the link I posted there are placeholders for a third and fourth series of releases which will hopefully contain the Grassella Oliphant albums as, again, the Collectables edition was weak and it was the last straw for me. Posted 14 Apr 2012 On the link I posted there are placeholders for a third and fourth series of releases ... I saw that too. I'd like a Japanese reissue of Ornette's This Is Our Music with bonus tracks from the same session(s). Not holding my breath, but it would be nice. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other Atlantic-related titles that I'm salivating to hear. Giuffre's The Four Brothers Sound would be cool, even though I have it on the Mosaic. Are these jewel case or mini-LP reissues? I couldn't tell from the link.

Posted 14 Apr 2012 (edited) Does anyone know whether the two Joe Castro albums, "Mood Jazz" and/or "Jazz Funk Soul" ever got a release on CD other than on Collectables? Castro's Groove Funk Soul was scheduled for release on CD in Japan in 2007, but was withdrawn. Jordi Pujol's Fresh Sound released it as part of Teddy Edwards' 2CD-set Sunset Eyes-Complete Recordings in 2010. Mood Jazz was only reissued on CD by Collectables. Edited 14 Apr 2012 by J.A.W. Posted 14 Apr 2012 What's the best source to purchase these from? CD Japan. Their service is good and in my experience they're reliable. They're selling these CDs for 952 yen, which is about $11.75, £7.40 and €9 at today's exchange rate as used by Universal Currency Converter.

I have them both on Collectables but wouldn't mind a better sounding copy of "Groove Funk Soul". I can't imagine the Fresh Sound release sounding any better...unless someone can tell me otherwise, of course. Edited 14 Apr 2012 by Head Man

Posted 26 Jun 2012 Warner Japan have announced the third and fourth series to be released in August and September. http://wmg.jp/jazz1000/index_03.html No shortage of interesting titles. I have bought a few of these, but only spent time with one so far - Money In The Pocket by Joe Zawinul. The CD sounds much improved over prior versions and better than the lp IMHO. I think that is where the real promise of this series lies ... while I have a bunch of these titles, many of them are in crappy "Collectables-sonic" sound.
