slide_advantage_redoux
I just learned that the legendary trombonist Eddie Bert has passed away. I have no specific details though. I am sure they will be coming soon. RIP Eddie Bert Edited September 29, 2012 by Greg Waits

mikeweil
Weren't we just recently reminiscing about those still alive that had encounterd Bird? Well, here's one. Great Player - this is a coda I wish I wouldn't have to listen to, though. But: according to AMG he was born May 16, 1922 in Yonkers, NY - 90 years of a great musical life, what more can you ask for ... R.I.P. sidewinder
A great long life and an excellent musician - RIP. His playing with Mingus was particularly good (especially the Cafe Bohemia recordings). Great picture you posted there, Brownie. Big Beat Steve
I've never been a big fan of the jazz trombone (it all too often gets in the way of instruments that naturally and effortlessly can manage higher tempos IMO) but Eddie Bert is one of those where an exception is definitely due. His Savoy albums ("Musician of the Year" and "Encore") are real swingers. So ... RIP and Thank you Hope it's OK to post these pics (from the K. Abe book) on a somewhat lighter note:

king ubu
... No matter, this is a fine fine SUPERFINE sugarmomma of a date. Gotta put it on the turntable again soon! My favorite Bert comes from his Savoy sessions with J.R. Monterose ... but also from those other sides Fresh Sound put out on this one: Fresh Sound also paired him with Jerry Dodgion and Carmen Leggio for a pretty good late date, issued as "The Human Factor". AllenLowe
Like Cool has, as well, a very Rolllins-ish Schildkraut on tenor. I didn't know Eddie well, but he was one of the real mensches in jazz. Sweetheart of a guy,

Big Beat Steve
Like Cool - The Contemporary Trombone Artistry of Eddie Bert Listening now - I picked this up at Bud's Jazz Records in Seattle some time back. RIP, Mr. Bert. Seeing that this LP has been plugged here by several forumists, that label (Somerset) made me hesitate ... Could Somerset (a budget reissue label) really have released something original? A check showed that they did not, at least not in this case. Becvause this LP is a reissue of Trans-World TWLP-208 "Let's Dig Bert (Eddie, That Is)". It's been around as a facsimile reissue LP on Fresh Sound (FSR-540). Will spin it shortly. As far as I can see it's not in the current Fresh Sound CD catalog, though, not even in a different repackaging (or has gone OOP again).
