GA Russell
Donald Fagen has a new album coming out tomorrow called Sunken Condos. If it gets good reviews, I'll probably get it for Christmas. Amazon has it on pre-order for $9.99. http://www.amazon.com/Sunken-Condos-Donald-Fagen/dp/B008O9V4C2/ref=pd_bxgy_m_text_y

JSngry
I'm trying to figure if Donald Fagen has anything intresting to say in 2012 that will make me wonder if he has anything interesting to say in 2012. Hmmm....
Shawn
I think Donald is a major talent, he has become one of my favorites over the past several years. I tend to prefer his albums with Steely Dan to his solo work, but there is always something that peaks my interest.
mikeweil
If he weren't such a perfectionist, I would like his music much more.
sonnymax
If he weren't such a perfectionist, I would like his music much more. That's why I became less interested in SD starting with Aja.
Big Al
I've enjoyed everything he's done since TWO AGAINST NATURE, and I'm one of those rarities who prefers his solo stuff over the SD stuff. I've heard the album once today on Rhapsody, and will be heading to Best Buy to get the CD later. There's nothing on this album that's any different from anything else he's done, but then Fagen is one of the few artists who can say the same thing over & over and keep me interested. It's all about the groove for me, and few people keep that groove going like Donald Fagen, AFAIC, IMHO, and YMMV.

Shawn
Listening to it on Spotify now, enjoying it so far.
robertoart
Listening to it on Spotify now, enjoying it so far. And he always knew how to best utilise a good Fusion guitarist. Give em a long solo in a well composed vocal song with interesting chord changes.
etherbored
the mastering of 'sunken condos' is, by fagen standards, or any standards really, pretty bad. the material is quite nice - especially after what was, to me, a disappointing 'morph the cat'. I've got it on order - waiting for it to arrive. Haven't heard anything. Think the mastering was done on a computer? At home? Seems that more and more people are doing it like that. Shawn
I really enjoyed the album, I thought it sounded okay but that's hard to judge streaming. The material was alot bouncier and more lively than Morph The Cat, playing is superb throughout.
BFrank
Spotify-ing it now. So far it sounds like generic SD. What am I missing?
GA Russell
I bought Morph the Cat the day it came out, and I too was somewhat disappointed.
BFrank
About the recording quality, here's what the eMusic review says: "Recorded at tiny home studios throughout New York City, Donald Fagen’s Sunken Condos is his most intimate and quirkily entertaining album since 1982′s The Nightfly." and "Lacking the corporate budget of such mid-’00s Steely Dan albums as Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go, Fagen instead focused on getting the most bang for his studio buck on Sunken Condos." Big Al
I loved Morph The Cat. Probably my favorite Fagen album.
BFrank
OK...........it gets better, later. Especially "Out of the Ghetto".
Shawn
OK...........it gets better, later. Especially "Out of the Ghetto". The last track was my favorite the first time through the album, need to listen again.
etherbored
I compared the mastering between 'The Nightfly', 'Kamakiriad', and 'Sunken Condos'. I found the difference shocking. I'd never want to criticize anything Donald has been a part of but Roger Nichols and Elliot Schiner are sorely missed in the mastering department, as far as I'm concerned. The mix, which is what you're marveling at in the streaming, is über. The mastering - not so much. I wonder how the 2-lp vinyl set is...PS: that last track, Planet d'Rhonda, is pretty hip! I loooooove the way Donald sings the words "plastic wrrrrrap"!

Mid 2000s? One was released in Y2K and the other in 2003. Hardly "mid' decade!
etherbored
has anyone else (listening at home to the physical disc or vinyl lp on a decent system) noticed the sub-par mastering?
