Miles Davis - So What: Complete 1960 Amsterdam Concerts

Blurb from the Website

“The seventh in the series, after including Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, JJ Johnson and Gerry Mulligan, presents the Miles Davis quintet of 1960 in the Concertgebouw. In April 1960, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, which caused a huge controversy. In October 1960 he came again, this time with Sonny Stitt. Both concerts with Miles Davis in absolute top form (like the famous rhythm section, Wynton Kelly / Paul Chambers / Jimmy Cobb), are now for the first time featured on the double CD "Miles Davis: So What - The Complete 1960 Amsterdam Concerts".

I don't think so. What grey label release is it this time? Dragon's 4 CD issue of the Stockholm concerts is legit, but I think the only "legit" bootleg releases of Miles we'll be seeing for thje time being is Sony's series. After the 1969 set I don't see them going backwards, but maybe something from the Pangaea/Aghartha band.

It's taken from radio broadcasts. The release is licensed and totally legit.

Not true. It is licensed by Dutch radio, who own the tapes, so it is legit.

See also this thread on the Hoffman board: http://forums.steveh...oncerts.302153/

The store linked to in the first post told me it is scheduled for release in the Netherlands on or around December 13.

I heard the concert with Coltrane on Dutch radio years ago. The music is brilliant, with Coltrane in top form, like on the Dragon Stockholm release.

Thanks for the Hoffman link. I wonder if it will be available from Amazon UK or US or just via the Dutch website.

Thanks Hans. Did the estate sign off on it?

I guess it's the same kind of deal as Dragon had with Swedish radio, who own the tapes of the Stockholm broadcasts. I don't have details, though.

There's also the new TCB/Swiss Radio Days release of an April 8, 1960 Zurich concert by this group.

Great news! This is an amazing concert and Sony did it all wrong (by including only one track in the big "Kind of Blue" box - if the whole show would have bought that box just for it!). Good to see a legit release.

Btw, there was some discussion about the Zurich set from the same tour, that has recently been reissued on TCB in their "Swiss Radio Days" series (legit for the first time, too, I think!) and it seems that one beats all previous releases by far, sound-wise!

It is being issued by the Dutch Jazz Archive in their Jazz At The Concertgebouw series.

I have 5 of the previous 6. All are great. The only one I'm missing is the Chet Baker, which I can only assume is caught in some legal purgatory as I've never actually seen it on offer.

Not showing up anywhere yet. As a matter of fact, signs of all previous ones seem to have disappeared as if they were all an illusion. Dusty usually gets these, but not until they've been out for a little bit. Btw, you can order from the site mentioned above in english as long as you've got a translator on yer puter.

Edit to add that the links in post #14 above ARE in English.

Didn't you click on the links in posts #1 and #14? These CDs can be ordered from those stores, the latter in English.

Didn't realize the Storyville release of the Zurich concert from the 90s was not legit! If it really wasn't legit, would Storyville have had the chops to release it a 2nd time in a 2 cd Miles compilation they released last year?:

http://www.jazzmesse...-digipak-101351

Well, it's PD material, so anyone can release it ... Jazz Unlimited (a Storyville sublabel) always looked fishy to me though - and Storyville has gone bad some time ago (though I do enjoy their recent boxes, but mostly they're just re-packings, as is their Miles 2CD set - nothing to do with chops or cojones, rather the lack of same, I think).

The new EU copyright rule covers all less-than-70-year-old recordings that weren't yet in the public domain when the rule came into effect; that includes 50-to-70-year-old recordings that hadn't been released yet in one way or another before the rule was changed.

Wait a minute... are these recordings actually from the Concertgebouw? If so, then- at least to my knowledge- none of this material has been issued before (the single track in the KOB box that Ubu mentioned is from the Kurhaus gig).

Pete Losin lists two concerts on April 9, one at 8.15 (Kurhaus) and one at midnight (Concertgebouw): http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Sessions.aspx?s=600409

Yes, they are, as is the whole series, "Jazz at the Concertgebouw".

I only have the Chet Baker release - I remember buying it directly from the Dutch Jazz Archive & not through a linked dealer as appears to be the case now - I emailed the Archive & ordered the CD using Paypal on their advice. I'm quite sure that when the Baker CD was released you could only buy it from this site.

Oh, true! Thought they were from Scheveningen - even better news, then!
