A huge Second on Seabrook/Cooper-Moore/Cleaver - Exultations. It's been on constant rotation over here, one of the more exciting releases of late.

Just listened to this one on Spotify two times in a row - great. This Diddley Bow sure is primally brutal. Fenks gents.

Streaming On Tidal: Fracture Mechanics

right in my wheelhouse for this sort of stuff. Some quieter portions but no limits on wildness while still having a measured approach with restraint which gives much of this ultra abstract improvised music such power and tensile qualities. Martin Kuchen adapts well to this type of music and anything I’ve heard with Burkhard Beins has been worth hearing.

Glad you liked it.

Digging in to the Astral Spirits catalogue

also have the wondrous 2 CD set with our own Alexander Hawkins, Watts, Moholo-Moholo & also our very own Karl Evangelista

plus I received the trio with Brandon Seabrook, Cooper-Moore & Gerald Cleaver - plus they sent me a bonus - a quartet that includes Daniel Carter, Brandon Lopez & Marc Edwards - led by Colin Fisher - not familiar with him - might be a bit too straight free jazz for my sweet spot - but a nice gift and Lopez is a favorite younger bassist who I’ve seen live a few times over the past few years and he’s marvelous. He’s almost 40 but still a bit younger than many. Glad this label is featuring all sorts of known and unknown to me musicians .

saw that Colin Fisher group play at a bar in Greenpoint years ago, fantastic... haven't heard the album however.

Karl's 2CD is amazing, full stop.

I bought a Cafe Oto membership at the start of the lockdown and have more digital download credits than I'm likely to be able to use. So I'd like to offer up five of the downloads to whoever here to use on the takuroku series, which is an in-house label releasing music through the lock-down. First come, first served - just PM me with the download that you would like and an email address and I'll figure out how to transfer it over.

Two of the somewhat recent Fundacja SLUCHAJ releases with Martin Kuchen sound amazing on first listen

Noobject with Rafal Mazur & Vasco Trilla

Sumpflegende with Ferran Faces, Alex Reviriego & Vasco Trilla

the former is a bit more typical free jazz like - the inclusion of the great Rafal Mazur takes it to a high level. Kuchen is great as always.

Will check these out, Küchen is great.

There is a new solo Barre Phillips album, "Thirty Years in Between" on Victo: https://www.discogs.com/Barre-Phillips-Thirty-Years-In-Between/release/15560544 . It's released as a twofer with the long OOP solo release from 1989, "Camouflage" (which might be my favorite solo bass record).

Not sure if this is the correct thread for this, but I've fallen pretty hard for Pourtant Les Cimes Des Arbres by Daunik Lazro, Benjamin Duboc and Didier Lasserre recently.

The mixture of emotional lyricism with free improv musical austerity is hitting all the buttons. Plus, Lazro's baritone playing is fantastic. It has an emotional intensity that this sort of music sometimes lacks.

If anyone knows the album and has any recommendations in a similar vein or with similar players, I'd be grateful to hear them.

Yes, a great one. Here is a good one with Lazro too: https://ayler-records.bandcamp.com/album/garden-s

And a fantastic solo Lazro: https://ayler-records.bandcamp.com/album/some-other-zongs

And Lazro's duo with Carlos Zingaro Hauts Plateaux is great. It's OOP, but cheap copies are available on Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/Daunik-Lazro-Carlos-Zingaro-Hauts-Plateaux/release/1309514

Second listen to the both of these. As good as this sort of thing gets, IMO

I probably prefer the trio set due to Mazur. Plus if I have to hear anyone play the sopranino saxophone it would have to be Kuchen. I’m usually not as attuned today the higher pitched saxes as some might be but his excursions on this horn are very exciting to my ears. He only plays sopranino on the trio release. Alto & tenor on the release with quartet (or trio plus if you will)

Midori Takada / Kang Tae Hwan –AN ETERNAL MOMENT NBLP 125. 300 LP copies limited edition

Sorry to resurrect and old post. I've been listening to Kang's Tokebi which he did with Kim Seok Chul in the early nineties. I've seen him referred to in hushed tones as a major figure on the Korean scene, but I've never actually seen any disk of his other than Tokebi being put forward. Does anyone know of any of other records that he put out that they would recommend? If nothing else it would help to vary my current Daunik splurge.

Crazy how much stuff gets released the day before BandCamp Friday. My phone was going mad with notifications all night.

Well, I got me Hans Reichel's "Bonobo" - a work of genius, as far as I am concerned (and I am not using the g-word lightly!).

Here are my recommendations for Kang Tae Hwan. I stick to available recordings (not very much is readily available). I have all his albums except two which I got as rips from a dear friend. His work with Takada goes back to the 1990s. There's a trio called Ton-Klami with him , Takada and Masahiko Satoh. One Ton-Klami is from No Business Records and should be still in print. https://www.discogs.com/Ton-Klami-Prophecy-Of-Nue/release/10855063

Then we have the trio of Kang Tae Hwan, Miyeon (piano) and Park Je Chun (percussion). They made two CDs and one was reissued in 2018 and is still vailable from the label.  https://www.discogs.com/%EA%B0%95%ED%83%9C%ED%99%98-%EB%AF%B8%EC%97%B0-%EB%B0%95%EC%9E%AC%EC%B2%9C-Isaiah/release/14553491

The last one I would like to point out might not be his best (but good music anyway). It was released by the US label VHF and his currently available as CD for 4$ at Bandcamp. https://vhfrecords.bandcamp.com/album/love-time

Two more I would like to recommend, although they are OOP and will be hard to obtain. The inaugural recording of South-Korean Free music. https://www.discogs.com/%EA%B0%95%ED%83%9C%ED%99%98-Korean-Free-Music/master/218161

and his solo/duo/trio CD with Masahiko Togashi and Satoh. https://www.discogs.com/Kang-Tae-Hwan-Masahiko-Satoh-Masahiko-Togashi-Asian-Spirits/release/4220503

Happy hunting ;-)
