Christmas Jazz/Pop/Rock Albums You Would Recommend

69 posts in this topic

I looked for this topic elsewhere but couldn't find it, so I thought I'd start a thread on what Christmas Jazz/Pop/Rock Albums you might recommend this time of year. I just discovered Ramsey Lewis' 1961 Christmas album and am enjoying it quite a bit. Ray Charles' "The Spirit of Christmas" is always spinning, as well. Thoughts? Suggestions?

(hold out for an original Philles LP, though. anything else, good as it might be, is only going to give you a different story)

And one to avoid, even if it only costs you 25 cents (as mine did):

Wynton Marsalis' "Crescent City Christmas." (The only album of his I actually listen to.)

We've been there and done this before - a search of +christmas +albums will help you find earlier threads - but here are some additions:

One of my favourites - on Plas' own label Carell Music. I THINK you can get this from CDbaby. Includes Tadd Dameron's 'A bebop carol' - first time it was recorded since Tadd's 1946 Savoy session.

Yeah, I'm a fan of this one. There's also an organissimo Holiday Sampler!

Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity does it for me. :)

I really enjoy Matt Wilson's Christmas disc from a couple of years ago, but mainly because it's not a traditional Christmas album. I've always had a soft spot for Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts stuff.

This is a great one to put on when you've had too much incoming from Wizzard, Wham and Noddy.

And death might be your Santa Claus! Indeed!

Kenny Burrell's Have Yourself a Soulful Little Christmas is a good one.

Actually, I think some of the best jazz Christmas stuff is in the free downloads of Organissimo.
