RogerF
CHRIS McGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH With DUDU PUKWANA/EVAN PARKER/MIKE OSBORNE/HARRY BECKETT/BRUCE GRANT/MARC CHARIG/NICK EVANS/RADU MALFATTI/HARRY MILLER/JOHNNY DYANI/LOUIS MOHOLO - Procession: Live At Toulouse + 3 (Ogun 39; UK) McGregor (piano),Harry Beckett, Marc Charig (trumpets), Radu Malfatti (trombone), Mike Osborne, Dudu Pukwana (alto saxes), Evan Parker (tenor sax), Bruce Grant (baritone sax, flute), Johnny Dyani, Harry Miller (basses), Louis Moholo (drums). CD features three BONUS TRACKS not on the original album: "TBS", "Andromeda", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me Cos You Think You Know Me". "Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath may have had fairly conventional instrumentation for a small big band (four saxophonists, two trumpets, one trombone, two bassists, drums and the leader on piano) but the music was anything but safe and predictable. McGregor and three of his fellow Blue Notes (altoist Dudu Pukwana, bassist Johnny Dyani and drummer Louis Moholo) join some of England's more advanced players, including altoist Mike Osborne, Evan Parker on tenor, and trumpeter Harry Beckett, for three originals, including two which are quite lengthy. Although the themes are strong, the emphasis is on improvising, particularly by the full group together, and there are plenty of intense sections on this colorful LP. Recommended to open-eared listeners, this is one of the Brotherhood of Breath's best recordings." This looks to be released 1 July!
Jazzjet
Looks very tasty. Thanks, Roger. There's a great private archive of early Chris McGregor ( and other South African jazz ) collected here : http://electricjive.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=chris+mcgregor This collection was recorded on reel-to-reel tape in the 60s by Ian Bruce Huntley. Well worth checking out.

clifford_thornton
Oh nice. Would like to hear the unreleased tracks. Excellent LP.
Head Man
I e-mailed Hazel a few days ago to ask whether she has any copies for sale. It seems strange that it's available in the US over a month before being released in the UK.
Alexander Hawkins
If anyone's interested, here's at a festival last month, featuring a number of Blue Notes/Brotherhood-related tunes... Psyched to hear Procession for the first time...a real rarity in being 1) Brotherhood with Dyani; and 2) Brotherhood playing 'You Ain't Gonna Know Me...' king ubu
Who's the additional alto player on the photo on the back, there's Dudu facing the camera and an alto on each of his sides, both, uhm, palefaces (beardy times, huh?) ... Mike Osborne to the left, and to the right, Elton Dean? So this photo is from another concert?

king ubu
Thought so, but wasn't 100% sure - thanks for confirming! Dean was on the Bridgewater part of the "Bremen to Bridgewater", rec. 1975 ... he might be on other stuff circulating from 1975, and he seems to be on the Moers 1976 concert.
