Head Man
It seems that this is the only Art Blakey biography in print at the moment Can anyone recommend it (or not)...or recommend something else?

jlhoots
Alan Goldsher: Hard Bop Academy (The Sidemen Of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers) is pretty good. I haven't read the Gourse.
ghost of miles
The Goldsher book is excellent, but it's actually a sort of encyclopedia covering all of the musicians who played in the Messengers over the years... invaluable in that respect, but not really a Blakey biography. Like jlhoots I haven't read the Gourse. Has it ever been established whether Blakey actually went to Africa in the late 1940s or not?
