I've got the Houston Person albums on LP. Can't say I'd recommend them to anyone who wasn't a raving fan like me. But his one hit single - 'Disco sax' is included in 'Get outa my way'. So there.

The Blue Mitchell is one of his very best albums - Jimmy Forrest and Walter Bishop are on it. Nuff sed?

I picked up the Harold Land and Roy Haynes reissues from the last batch, and am well-pleased with them. I'll plan to pick up the Hadley Caliman from this upcoming batch.

I've wondered about the Haynes ... care you describe it? Thanks

Very much of it's time (1971), spiritual overtones, electric piano and bass. It's a very good, not great, album. Spectacular front line (Hannibal Peterson, George Adams) is underutilized. A few extra nods towards being a drummer-led date. If that era is magical for you (it is for me), you'll definitely want it. If not, you can probably safely pass. Be sure to get the Harold Land, which is the group he co-led with Bobby Hutcherson.

Is the Mitchell electrified?

Consider it a personal deficiency, but I just never cottoned to the electric bass & keyboard sound so a great deal of 70s jazz just doesn't land with me.

Maybe an electric keyboard here and there, but largely acoustic. You can preview the songs on iTunes (or Amazon?).

Harold will "Land" with you, rest assure- from memory purely acoustic stuff......

There's some electric piano/two keyboard action on there. But great album. That Hutcherson/Land combination was special.

Picked up the Caliman recently. I enjoy it, but am not blown away. He plays solid tenor on the set, but he's not really searching...I prefer his flute playing on the album which is deep and soulful. I just received "Gratitude" in the mail and feel it is a much stronger effort. Hadley Caliman was a great reedman.

Also - there is an unidentified trumpet on the recording.

just noticed the trumpet playing as well, and also that the timings didn't match... there's an explanation on discogs: The current "reissue" couples Side A of Hadley Caliman with Side A of Iapetus, his second mainstream album, thus leaving out half of the self-titled album

https://www.discogs.com/de/Hadley-Caliman-Hadley-Caliman/release/6403264

While I admit that I'd have preferred a reissue of Iapetus to a reissue of Hadley Caliman, I am nevertheless rather pissed - especially since this is apparently just an error...
