CJ Shearn
I have a like new CD version of the set on the way to me as shamefully I've lacked most of his Atlantic recordings. I've heard of a few defects, should I be concerned?
jazzbo
I don't think so. You're in for some great listening.
David Ayers
This is the new budget version, right? Don't remember hearing about defects. Got one here but haven't opened it.
CJ Shearn
No, this is a like new copy of the 1995 set. I don't think so. You're in for some great listening. Looking forward to it, I've already offered my mini LP (US version) of Giant Steps and Coltrane's Sound to friends gratis.
David Ayers
No, this is a like new copy of the 1995 set. Cool! The new one is no frills, but at least it doesn't take up much space!
jazzbo
I have both the original CD box set and the vinyl version. This is important music in my listneing world!
David Ayers
I did just open my copy of the budget box and it contains a very nice 74-page booklet. Never saw the booklet in the original set but this one is just fine - essays, lots of photos, discographical information. Pretty good actually. jazzbo
Sounds like the same booklet! Awesome value.
king ubu
Same as the Mingus then, which also holds the same (or nearly same) booklet.
coooltrane
just curious. I checked amazon and didn't see a new version of this great set. I have the 95 box, which I still am enjoying 18 years later

David Ayers
Bit puzzled by the Scotch tape in that image until I checked my box.... [that is the material from the can on disc 7]
king ubu
Yeah, seems they translated the digipack and "can" boxes into cardboard sleeves. The original edition has a hardcover book, no idea if the new one has, too ...

erwbol
The original edition also had a booming bass sound. I'm more excited about the Hybrid SACDs of Coltrane's Atlantic albums ORG Music Group is scheduled to release. Their SACDs of Rollins' The Bridge and Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come were fabulous.
jazzbo
Apparently Org Music has canceled all their upcoming releases. That seems to be the case, places that had them for preorder no longer do.
etherbored
slick. it's like a more ergonomically accessible version of the unwieldy cube. now if they'd only do that for...
erwbol
Apparently Org Music has canceled all their upcoming releases. That seems to be the case, places that had them for preorder no longer do. That's a blow! Do you know which SACD titles were released before this cancellation? I believe My Favourite Things was released early on. Are their LP releases also cancelled? Edit: Just found your post on this matter on the Hoffman board, Lon. It's sad ORG decided to call it quits with the SACD format. Edited December 24, 2013 by erwbol
king ubu
might help to buy a boombox instead
jazzbo
Yes it is sad because the three I have (the Coltrane, Coleman and Rollins) are very very good.
Leeway
So, is the revised version of "Heavyweight Champion" also a remastered version? Or has the packaging just been slimmed down?
J.A.W.
So, is the revised version of "Heavyweight Champion" also a remastered version? Or has the packaging just been slimmed down? Probably the latter. I have the earlier version; that one was mastered by Gene Paul.
David Ayers
The same remastering.
Leeway
OK, thanks.
Guy Berger
This is amazing music, except for the Don Cherry collaboration which is merely OK.
