Milt Jackson 'Off Spring"

8 posts in this topic

Lee Morgan recorded Milt Jackson's Off Spring on his first album for Vee Jay, "Here's Lee Morgan" in 1960. I can't find if Bags has ever recorded that tune himself, under that title or another one. Can anyone help on this ?

Thanks.

A search on Lord didn't come up with anything.

This is a very tricky question. We either need to find an exhaustive discography of Milt Jackson, or, if he never recorded it himself, then find a way to search the Lord by song title. Is that what you already tried, John, or did you just search the Milt Jackson portion of the Lord?

Bertrand.

Another idea - maybe Chris Sheridan would know. I believe he is at work on a bio-disco of Milt similar to his Basie, Adderley, and Monk bio-discos.

Vincent, do you have his e-mail? If not, I will try to dig it up.

Bertrand.

Hi Bertrand, I searched the Lord cd on the title as given. Jackie Mac has an "Offspring".

Although the record states M. Jackson, M. J. Q. Music, it could be Clifford Jordan's composition, since he is playing on the record and the BMI catalog also lists him as a composer of a song with that title. Credits often misattribute compositional credits.

a 13 year old thread... the LOC has a copyright claim by W. Milton (Milt) Jackson for a tune with that title from 1957... but, of course, that doesn't prove that this is what they recorded... (link)

Clifford had it listed as his in a list of his pieces his widow has. Clifford copyrighted that title and the lead sheet is the same song.

The 1957 copyright is certainly the source of this confusion. Never saw that lead sheet and I cannot look at stuff at LC anymore.
