Universal Music Italia box sets

Recommended Posts

As suggested by King Ubu, these are the box sets released by the Italian branch of Universal Music. The list will be edited as more titles are released (or are known about - all help will be welcome!). As far as I know, these are low-priced, verbatim reissues of previous releases.

NOTE: When the title includes the word "albums", it's safe to assume that the set will be a collection of the albums of the relevant artist as leader, not including the recordings as sideman for the same label(s).

damn, you were faster and I didn't double check before posting my own thread ... maybe a kind moderator can delete it? I'll reproduce my post here:

Okay, so let's give this a shot ... please help complete the list!

First, as far as I know, it all started with thrree genuine Universal sets that were reissued, with reduced booklets:

Jazz at the Philharmonic 1944-49

Charlie Parker - Complete Verve Recordings

Lester Young - Complete Verve Recordings

There are long gone (they came and went pretty fast, a friend of mine got either the Young or JATP, but I've never seen it) - the Bird is back though!

Then, there started to turn up a wealth of album-based sets, containing music that belonged to Fantasy, went on to Concord and was brought back by Universal, the European distributor or Concord:

Chet Baker - Complete Riverside & Jazzland Albums

John Coltrane - Complete Prestige Albums

Miles Davis - Complete Prestige Albums

Eric Dolphy - Copmlete Prestige/New Jazz Albums

Duke Ellington - The Carnegie Hall Concerts

Bill Evans - The Riverside & Milestone Albums

Lee Konitz - Complete Milestone Albums

Thelonious Monk - Complete Prestige Albums

Thelonious Monk - All Monk: The Riverside Albums

Sonny Rollins - Complete Prestige Albums
also a few "partial" sets:

Charles Mingus - Leader on Debut (new compilation in this form)

Bill Evans - The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings 1961

Miles Davis - Steamin'/Workin'/Relaxin'/Cookin'

Then, they went on exploring the Universal vaults some more:

Count Basie - The Original American Decca Recordings

Clifford Brown - The Complete EmArcy Recordings

Duke Ellington - Brunswick & Vocalion 1926-31 (= Early Ellington, GRP)

Bill Evans - Complete Bill Evans on Verve

Billie Holiday - Complete Billie Holiday on Verve

Keith Jarrett - The Impulse Years

Charles Mingus - The Impulse Albums

Bud Powell - Complete Bud Powell on Verve

Ant as one of the latest, they're also bringing back (in spite of the album box listed above!) this one:

Miles Davis - Chronicle: The Complete Prestige Recordings

A note on the Coltrane Prestige box: there's also a scaled down version of the Complete Prestige Recordings box around (the same friend has it and I saw it, it's pretty nice with a real booklet ... I guess it's the same deal as the new Chronicle set, which is also said to come with a real booklet) - I'd not go for the albums box!

The albums sets, to my knowledge (I've only had the Rolins in my own hands) come with minimal booklets, the Bud Verve set has a minimal one, too, but the Brownie has the same as the original box had ... so it seems it's not handled the same way always (huge original booklets - JATP, Bud on Verve, prob. Billie on Verve - won't e included again).

No, those were produced by Universal France - Complete Masters by Ella, Billie, Bird, Bechet and Satchmo (though with cut-off-dates in the case of Ella and Bechet, and I guess with Satch, too, though that one I don't have).

Here's the thread on those:

The dedicated website set up about these is still online, too:

@ubu - maybe worth including the Coltrane Complete Prestige in the main list instead of in a note - I suspect that and the Miles Davis Chronicle will be among the most popular and I dare say they are responding to feedback about the other perhaps less satisfactory album sets by those two.I wouldn't want a casual browser of this thread to miss those!

Given the barcode (0888072335936), I'm not sure this was an Italian release, but I'll include it anyway

Which of these sets have since not been (partly) improved upon in terms of sound quality (including releases of individual albums)?

My hunch is that none of them have been touched sound-wise.

Good point on the JC Complete Prestige - I just assumed it was universal.it but maybe not. The Davis Chronicle which I mentioned in the other thread is certainly may be them. I actually don't know.

There may be hopes yet that they will do the full Dolphy box and, who knows, the Kirk, if these things sell which it seems they do.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant by subsequent releases of the same material or parts thereof.

It's probably not a question on the minds of most people here interested in these re-issues, so best to forget I even asked. It would just derail the conversation and a little detective work with Google should bring some clarity on this matter.

Yep, I think that Coltrane isn't coming from Italy, hence the inclusion in the note only.

Not sure about the recent "Chronicle" ... I actually plan to get it, but haven't come around so far (I have all or most of the music, but having it in chronological order and in one place would be great).

Regarding the Bird set, this was indeed recently reissued for the second time as a cheapo version - here's the link to the offering of the first one (rel. 2005):

http://www.amazon.it/Bird-Complete-Verve-Bob-Dylan/dp/B000PMFUSK/

(Not sure what Dylan has to with it)

The Pres (rel. 2006) and JATP (rel. 2007) are these:

http://www.amazon.it/Complete-Studio-Sessions-One/dp/B000PMFUSU/

http://www.amazon.it/Complete-Jazz-Philharmonic-Verve-1944/dp/B000FDDYQY/

So that was the first chapter, but these seem to have been smaller editions.

Probably explains why the Coltrane and Davis are more costly than the universal.it sets. I wonder where they originate then. Does anybody actually have one?

It looks like a Concord US release (the barcode indicates US product, if I'm not mistaken) for European markets. FWIW it's not listed in the Concord site and Amazon.com doesn't seem to carry it. (It doesn't appear on Amazon.jp either)

I'm only speculating, though. It'd be great if anyone could tell what it says on the actual box.

Amazon.com lists the Coltrane as an (expensive) import...

I just asked my friend - will report back when he replies.

He bought the set from jpc.de (upon my recommendation), where they have a Concord blurb (the reduced price has been like that for months, but they say they don't have it in stock ... still worth a try I'd say):

Here's what it says on the Coltrane box:

(P) 2011 © 1991 Fantasy Inc. Prestige Records, Tenth & Parker, Berkley, CA 94710, All Rights Reserved.
Made in the EU. LC 15025, Universal - Universal Music Group International.

That'd mean the box was produced by Fantasy originally, and that it has been released in Europe by the international branch of Universal, which is based in London. From what I've seen, this would be a Europe-only release, hence an import in the US and Japan.

From what a friend's told me, boxes like the Jarrett, with a © line referring especifically to Italy, would mean a product for the local market which can also be exported to others. In practical terms, this would normally imply fewer units manufactured.

I guess it's essentially just a european scaled-down reissue of the old box ... probably european-only due to PD.

And yeah, I guess indeed the new "Chronicle" might be the same.

Given that these guys own the masters they're releasing, I don't think it has anything to do with PD, Ubu.

Actually it might. Since these packages are being manufactured and marketed in the EU, they might avoid contractual obligations from the US. Just wondering.
