l p
I was listening to In a Silent Way recently, and in the middle of "Shhh/Peaceful" i thought, that sounds a lot like Larry Young on organ on the right channel, rather than zawinul. so i searched organissimo forum for any discussion about this, and found a 2008 post: "Larry Young was present at the session for In A Silent Way, just a few days after Mother Ship." as has been stated on this forum, there is at least one other record on which a lot of people think that it's Larry Young rather than the credited organist: Grant Green "Iron City" (Cobblestone CST-9002, Muse MR-5120) Grant Green(g) John Patton(org) Ben Dixon(ds)
l p
from miles list: October 26, 2014 Stumbled across this passage from Howard Mandel's Miles, Ornette, Cecil: Jazz Beyond Jazz, p. 60. It's a quote from Bob Belden: "Larry Young was supposed to be the organ player for In A Silent Way, but when Tony Williams saw him, he kept Young out of there--that's why Zawinul played organ, when he was just there to provide some songs. When Tony saw McLaughlin and Larry Young there, he went 'Oh, no!' That was his band, Lifetime, that he ws trying to get signed, and he saw Miles was about to take it over. He got Larry Young out of there..." more from belden October 26, 2014, looks like a rushed text message: "Larry was at the, session but Tony, freaked when,he,saw McLaughlin so he suggested Larry go,home so Joe played, larrys organ, srtup" So at worst for my theory, i think that miles told zawinul to play in the style of larry young on "Shhh/Peaceful". But i still think that it's larry young playing.
