Recommend a great Rock/Pop album.

So I've been in somewhat of a new music funk recently. What I mean by that is I'm having a hard time finding a new album to get into.

Who's heard a great new Rock/Pop album recently? It can be an older album I suppose, but I've been in a Rock/Pop mood lately, so I would like something from those genres.

Recent faves have been The River from Izzy Stradlin, Circuital from My Morning Jacket, Modern Vampires Of The City from Vampire Weekend, and How Was Tomorrow from The Cash Brothers.

Any suggestions would be truly appreciated.

Check out Parquet Courts / Parkay Quartz. May sound a bit too much like Pavement on Thorazine to some, but LIGHT UP GOLD (recent, though not 2014) is, IMO, a great scum rock philosophical tract.

On a more gentle, shoegazey trip, I highly recommend Crushed Stars' FAREWELL YOUNG LOVERS.

Spoon - Girls Can Tell

The Walkmen - Bows + Arrows

Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret

The National - Alligator

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway

Anything by Spoon ... Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is a good entry point as is their latest, They Want My Soul.

The Blue Shadows were a Vancouver, Canada-based band that were only together from 1992-1996. I think this album is one of the best "albums you've never heard of" type of discoveries I've ever made. There are some good live performances up on Youtube, also:

The majority of their material had a country-rock flavor to it, but with an edge. Very good songwriting, nice tight harmonies between Bill Cowsill and Jeff Hatcher, and Hatcher's distinctive and polished rhythm and solo guitar playing. An excerpt from an article about Bill Cowsill, after he passed away in 2006 (his brother Barry had passed away in 2005, a victim of Katrina)...

"In the early ’90s, Cowsill joined forces with singer-songwriter Jeffrey Hatcher to form the Blue Shadows. Cowsill called it the best creative partnership of his life. Their vocal blend drew justified comparisons to the Everlys. The pair, along with drummer J.B. Johnson and bassist Barry Muir (who replaced Elmar Spanier), fused hardcore honky-tonk, British Invasion pop, R&B and soul. Acclaim came easy; commercial fortune proved elusive."

Dolan, did you get the latest Drive-By Truckers? It's probably their best yet.

Also check out Sturgill Simpson. He's got a Waylon voice and is a good songwriter with contemporary sensibilities, made obvious by the title of his latest: "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music"

In Rock/Pop, my favorite new bands of 2014 are Temples and Syd Arthur: Brit bands with heavy 60s influences.

Jim, that's exactly how I feel about How Was Tomorrow from the Cash Brothers. They were also a Canadian Alt. Country act that wasn't together for very long. Based on those two tunes you posted from The Blue Shadows (which were excellent), I'd be willing to bet you'd really dig that album as well. Not the best tune on the album, but there isn't much to choose from on Youtube. Still pretty good, though:

Here's another really good one:
