Charles Lloyd - Wild Man Dance Suite

Performance

Wild Man Dance Suite is a sweeping new masterpiece from Charles Lloyd. Blending traditional jazz elements with visceral sounds and textures from antiquity, Lloyd has created something altogether new and exciting. Composed for a quartet of piano, bass, and drums, with the addition of Greek lyra and the Hungarian gypsy cimbalom, the ensemble performs the six movements of the suite like a flowing orchestral unit.

Saturday, April 18, 8:00 p.m.

This spring is shaping up to be a busy season for the tenor saxophonist Charles Lloyd, who at 76 may be approaching yet another peak in a long career. On April 14 he’ll break in a new relationship with Blue Note Records, by releasing a live album, “Wild Man Dance.” On April 18 he’ll present the North American premiere of the “Wild Man Dance Suite” in the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

He’ll also perform the suite on April 23 and 24 at SFJazz in San Francisco, as part of a four-night residency there. And during that same week, he’ll be recognized as an NEA Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, in a concert and ceremony on April 20 at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home to Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Just saw Charles two nights in a row at SFJAZZ. Last night was the Wild Man Dance Suite - a long series of passages with no break for about 90 minutes. Tonight was Charles with his New Quartet that he's been playing with for several years. Both very interesting and demand fullest attention because of the intricate interplay among the musicians, and well worth it.

Nice to see Charles active and vibrant and enjoying himself. My first ever jazz concert was a double bill of his group and Freddie Hubbard's quintet in November 1971.

Who is in the New Quartet? Is Jason Moran still there as I notice Gerald Clayton is on the the Wild Man dance recording

I posted this elsewhere but it seems relevant here too. Hope I'm not breaking any rules.

Just saw Charles Lloyd with Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz (pedal steel and lap guitars), Reuben Rogers (electric bass) and Eric Harland (from Lloyd's new quartet on drums). Though Lloyd was front and center, because of the instrumentation and the song selection it seemed like a Bill Frisell concert with guest star Charles Lloyd. Numbers included Shenandoah, Red River, The Strangest Dream and (I think-- I'm not up on Christian hymns) Abide with Me, interspersed with what I think were some Lloyd originals. The encores were a searing, raucous Masters of War and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. I'd seen each of them twice before at the same small theater but this was the first time I'd seen them together. In fact I think it may be the only tie they're playing together. I loved it.

Sounds like a great show. I wish I'd seen that one, too! He brought them together on Sunday:

Charles Lloyd saxophones, flute
Bill Frisell guitar
Greg Leisz lap steel guitar, dobro
Reuben Rogers bass
Eric Harland drums

Where? I see he's using his new quartet at Jazz Fest.
