Steve Reynolds
Add Joachim Badenhorst. I seen some cool circular breathing on that horn when he played with Malaby's Novela
danasgoodstuff
Love what Bennie Maupin did on bass clarinte in an ensemble role on Bitches Brew...
clifford_thornton
Theo Loevendie is another fine bcl player from Holland; mostly known as a composer of contemporary music, he also led some heavy jazz ensembles in the '60s and '70s on which he played a variety of reeds and piano. And on Loevendie's LP Chess! (BASF), Harry Sparnaay stands in for him admirably.
A Lark Ascending
Love what Bennie Maupin did on bass clarinte in an ensemble role on Bitches Brew... Yes, some of the distinctive colour of that recording comes from the b-cl.
Alexander Hawkins
Michael Moore also plays bass clarinet, on the subject of Dutch players...
clifford_thornton
Or at least players resident in Holland...
Alexander Hawkins
Oops yes, clumsily worded by me!
Steve Reynolds
In fact, Moore's "solo" section during Gerry Hemingway's The Marmalade King is superb. His duet on alto saxophone during the closing section is also as strong as anything I've heard from the great reed player on record. And YES - I know it is OOP and very expensive to get. Fwiw, it is now available from one seller @$29.99 which is a good price for this disc - and worth every penny
jlhoots
Evan Chandlee played it with Keno Speller, Kenneth Terroade, Claude Delcloo and the Cohelmec Ensemble in the '70s. Definitely another voice worth checking out though most of his appearances are on scarce/obscure LPs. Yes on Rudi Mahall! I'll "3rd" Mahall. clifford_thornton
Arthur Doyle is another, though he called it a "voice-o-net."
Leeway
Almost forgot: Gebhard Ullman.
B. Clugston
Walter Zuber Armstrong played some nice bass clarinet. Pharoah Sanders got bass clarinet workout during "Leo" (in duet with Rashid Ali) on Coltrane's Live in Japan marathon.
optatio
Ove Volquartz - artist deserving wider recognition! http://m-etropolis.com/blog/tag-trio-jean-demey-yoko-miura-ove-volquartz-discovery-of-mysteries/
colinmce
Andre Jaume! Clifford mentioned him, but Josh Sinton's bcl solos in Nate Wooley's group are outrageously good and original.
Sundog
Italian, Alberto Pinton is a very fine multi instrumentalist including bass clarinet. Check out any number of titles under his lead, group efforts like Dog Out or his latest venture Nascent.
sonnymax
Another big fan of Michel Pilz! Listen to clips from these two recordings: Michel Pilz/Bob Degen: Tilly's Eyes Peter A.Schmid-Michel Pilz Quartet: Sschmilz
Milestones
Wow, such a big response. I can't claim familiarity with many of the artists mentioned. I've never yet made a playlist of bass clarinet. Maybe I should.
Milestones
Seems like I've heard some bass clarinet from Chico Freeman.
Ed S
Stumbled on these guys at the Montreal Jazz Festival back in 2013. Free outdoor show. Very Good Bomata. The Bass clarinet player's name is Guillaume Bourque https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=29vPC5H_mpw

mikeweil
There are some more of this band on his preceding Verve LP, and on another Riverside LP. Plus some live tracks from a TV show. FWIW, the Fresh sound reissue adds some of these as a bonus. Very nice relaxed music, Herbie had a comfortable feel on the instrument, but never again picked it up after these recordings, AFAIK. mjazzg
Just listening to Vinny Golia quartet - Sfumato [Clean Feed]. Some very nice b cl from Golia on this as elsewhere in his discography
Joe
Chicagoan Jason Stein is a younger player producing some worthy and intriguing music on this instrument.
