Obrecht brought Gunther Schuller to our class and later regaled me with stories of Art Tatum on 52nd St. I owe him a lot. 

 

Having watched the video, he seemed like a nice man who led a full life.
Chuck - were you ever in touch with him after your college years?

I've always been curious about his music, but never got around to listening...

 

His abilities as a composer were on the same level of excellence as his competence as a chess player. He just wasn't performed beacuse he was classified an amateur due to his great reputation as chess expert. Whoever actually played his music was impressed. Not to be confused with Francois André Philidor.
