OJC was started in the early seventies; can't be sure whether Prestige was still owned by Bob Weinstock then, but maybe, 'cos the early issues were all, as I recollect, Prestige items. There couldn't have been any VJD CDs as early as that. OK, to the point. The Lord discography, though no one would say it's exhaustive, doesn't list any VJD issues of Jug's albums. And then began the rebuy of things you already had...or not. Depending on the item and the liner notes, I could prefer the 24000 series to its original artwork single LP counterparts. Liner notes could be either skim or stupid back in the day, and sometimes a contemporaneous essay was preferred. Sometimes. Weinstock's Prestige was running a "Historical Series" in the late 60s & earliest 70s, though. But by the time the OJCs came around, that was Fantasy. Gheorghe Posted September 21, 2016 Report Share Posted September 21, 2016 Not long ago I purchased his 1973 Montreux album, with Hampton Hawes on electric piano, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass and Kenny Clark, with Guests Adderly Brothers and Dexter Gordon. Prestige/OJC reissues were not consistent - sometimes they added tracks, sometimes not, other sessions were re-assembled to complete form, others reissued in the scattered pattern of the LPs. It's much less effort to pull out an old LP master tape and re-release it 1-to-1 instead of consulting the disco - I bet most people now working at Universal never even heard of it. We allready have the Stitt box, which includes all of the Ammons/Stiit band; another with 78 era stuff; one with all the jam sessions including the early ones with Stitt and the later ones with Trane; and one or two with the albums featuring Ammons as the main soloist. I still have the Carroll/Jefferson/Ross LP, because there never was a CD with all of these tracks. I like listening to the ones that Weinstock cobbled together from bits and pieces as well as listening to the complete session with Mal Waldron that was never issued as an album or even as a CD compilation and the two LPs of 'Organ combos'. Can't say I like the jam sessions very much, though I know Weinstock did. What I do like of them is most of what's on the long OJC CD 'Gene Ammons greatest hits: the fifties'. That's nearly all of those jam session tracks I like - plus the whole of 'Blue Gene', of course, on which Gene and Mal seemed to have been collaborating to get a Jug-like result, all the way through.
